I should be taking delivery of a new MINI within
the next month. However, I would like to register
for personalized plates beforehand. Does anyone
know if it is possible to purchase personalized
plates for a car before it is registered and/or
assigned plates?

Yes, do it on line at ca.dmv.gov

The plates take about 6 to 8 weeks... so just don't pick them up at the DMV until you have your car. Also - at the time you pick them up is when they are assigned to a car... in other words, at the time of order you don't specify any particular car to put them on.

 

Yes, you can purchase the plates. Than when you go to DMV to pick them up, you just let them know which car to assign them to.

 

Also, bring your vehicle registration, the notice that they send you, and any old plates you have to surrender.

Yes, you can buy them before you take delivery of your car, that's what I did. Like folks said already, just bring the old plates and the registration to trade for the new plate. If you are buying out-state, you get your assigned plate immediately when you bring your car to register, otherwise, you may need to wait them to mail to you, so wait till you get your assigned plate before going to get your new plate, you need them to trade.
