2002 MC CVT dead.... $$$$

Hi all. I have an '09 MCS with auto, hoping it doesn't have the same tranny as my buddy's 2002 MC.

His just died at 110k..... dealer is asking ~9k for a new one!

Is there an alternative to the dealer? Is there some specific component in there that's know to fail? (rather than replacing the whole thing).

Anyone been there, done that?

Any ideas at all will be really appreciated,

Thanks!

JIMINNI is indeed correct. Although my dealer is just a bit under 6000k for the transmission (not including core or labor).

As for your second question, the R50s use a CVT transmission created by ZF industries (2002-2007). The new Coopers (R56) use the 6 speed automatic from the old R53 MCS which is made by Getrag, which is much more durable and reliable IMO.

To be accurate, Aisin makes the R56 auto transmission. The 6-speed manual comes from Getrag.

And yes, it costs an arm and a leg to swap out the CVT.

My apologies, you are correct it is Aisin.
