8th Annual Microcar Classic - Brookline, MA, July 12
I attended this event a couple of summers ago, and it was a lot of fun. It's held at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, right across the city line from Jamaica Plain. It usually features over 100 classic microcars like Messerschmitts, old BMW 600s, classic Minis, and newer cars like Smart cars and even MINIs (I don't know if MINIs will make the cut this year, not being as much of an oddity anymore). Some of these things make the classic Mini look like a Cadillac! The great thing about this show is that, unlike many auto shows, many of the cars are actually driven, and driven spiritedly! When I was there they set up a "course" with traffic cones on the grass, blindfolded drivers, and had their partners, walking alongside the car, try to guide them through the course without knocking down any cones. There are cars there that could take a 90 degree turn in a six-foot wide hallway with ease. It's great for kids, too - a lot of the owners are willing to give kids short rides on the grass. Here's the website. I'm definitely planning on going; hope to see some of you guys there! I know it's far in the future, but the date is set, so I figured I'd post it here.
Messerschmitt Kabinenroller:

BMW 600: 20 hp, 62 mph top speed (nice chili red/white!)

BMW 300 Isetta: one-cylinder engine, 63 mpg, 53 mph top speed

Just wanted to bump this thread up, since the event is coming up and I posted this so long ago.
I just realized that I recognize the turquoise MINI woody wagon in my post above from the Braintree "Italian Job" screening! I know I met the owner, because I sat in it, but I don't remember who it was. My memory is famously terrible.
Anyway, let me know if you plan on coming; I'll be there!

I'm planning on going. At least at the moment. And if we start sacrificing things to the rain gods right now, we might get lucky and get a sunny day!

Ant, I don't know what year calendar you're looking at... July 12 is the Saturday after 4th of July weekend (4th is a Friday).
It's basically just outside Boston city limits, on the southwest side. Right near Jamaica Plain. CooperSpeed, it takes me about 2 1/2 hours to get here from Litchfield, but I tend to keep it under 75 on the highway.

Yeah, it's cool, but not really cool enough to drive 140 miles for unless you're really into microcars. Some of these people definitely have that fanatical gleam in their eye!

I'm still going. From the website it looks like the open-to-public part is from 11 to 3 on Saturday. I probably won't be there until at least 1:00, but I'll be there! I have a mini-golf/Salvation Army/diner date in Saugus in the morning...
I was looking for this thread to give it a bump... Yep, I'll be there. The weather's promising to be nice on Saturday afternoon (early), and that's perfect for a MOT event.
I'll be the guy trying to restrain two little kids from excessively pawing the cars...although I hear that this is a pretty child-friendly event (for a car show).
As has been said, anyone who can make it to the Boston area for this should definitely try. This is supposedly one of the largest annual gatherings of micro cars in the US. Should be fun...and I'll be looking for other new MINIs at least in the parking lot (we're actually much too large to be considered micro cars in the sense of this show).
Chris, you're going to the Salvo on a date!? That's my kinda woman...

Well, not really THAT kind of date. It's a coworker that I hang out with so much that there are whispers around the office, but we just enjoy hanging out together, and she insists that the Saugus Salvo (and the nearby diner) are not to be missed. So, off we go...
You can probably scam yourself a ride or two on account of having the kids in tow.
When I went two years ago, lots of kids were getting rides in the cars.
Yeah, the MINI will probably not be a participant this year. Hope to see you there!
