H/K blows wide open, then resets?
Hello everyone. Saturday night I'm 25 minutes into a 30 minute drive, rockin' the satellite radio and with no warning the H/K sound system blew wide open. There were two loud, less than 1 second SHOTS of STATIC followed by continuous MAX VOLUME STATIC (white noise). The worst part is that turning the radio off did NOT stop it! I tried the volume, modes, pressed every button - hoping it would stop. Tried to cover my ears and continue driving this manual gearbox. It was crazy stressful!
Made it to the house, turned off the engine, removed the key and... it kept BLASTING STATIC (now parked in a quiet neighborhood). At this point, my ears (and brain) are freaking out and there is a burning smell. Ran into the garage for some tools thinking I was going to disconnect the battery but got wise quickly and in the passenger footwell, found Fuse 49 with the Radio symbol, pulled it and... silence! Thank god it was over.
Drove it to the dealer Monday morning and got a call later saying they were "unable to duplicate". They replaced the fuse expecting to hear my description and the sound was normal. No fault codes stored in any vehicle memory. Test drove car while observing radio characteristics: radio operated normally at all times. No unusual odors noticed.
So now I keep earplugs and needle-nose pliers in the glove box. Everything sounds like it did before but I'm sure the speakers are a bit tweaked running white noise (at MAX volume) for almost 15 minutes. I originally thought the amplifier had blown but I gather they usually go silent, not blow wide open and then reset.
Any thoughts, comments or similiar experiences?
