So you lost all storage space in the back. I bet it sounds good though.

It was the stock system. Before I ordered the vehicle I looked listened to the HK and was not impressed with the sound, especially for $700, so I ordered the stock knowing I would upgrade it.

So did you end up disabling the 6.5" speakers under the front seats?

Yeah, I had to disable them. They didn't sound that well with the system. I could have gone more elaborate and installed component speakers and replaced the 6.5's with nicer mid woofers, but I didn't want to build new boxes for them or cut holes into the pilars to install tweeters. The coxial JL Audio's in the doors sound just fine.

Gotcha - thanks. Couple of other questions if you don't mind:

1 - How would you think the system would sound if I just replaced the door speakers and ran them off of the existing system (using them in conjunction with the floor speakers)?

2 - Did you have to rewire-everything in order to use the new amp?

Thanks again - just got my countryman and want to upgrade the system, but am not real excited about adding a separate base in the trunk so trying to see what would get me a nice boost in sound quality without a lot of customization.

Are you running stock or HK? If stock, they would sound good, but you need to run power to them (amp), the radio alone cannot power them enough.

I didn't have to "rewire" everything with the amp, infact the radio being what it, I couldn't get to the head unit to wire the amp directly. I just tapped into the existing wire.

Thinking about going with that JL Audio Microsub and a JL 250/1 amp, keeping the up front speakers the same.

Question:
Do you ride (or have you rode) around with the load floor down?
If so,
  • Does it fold down level? (I couldn't tell if the grill was included in the depth of the sub box)
  • Does it effect the sound?
  • Does the amp get hot and overheat?
Thanks

Yes, the floor folds down flat. Infact I have about 2 inches to space. The floor has a small section that folds back that leaves plenty of airflow. The sound is not effected either way.

Just adding notes from my sub install.

I ended up going keeping everything up front stock and adding a 12" MTX FPR12-04 Shallow Sub in a Atrend 12SME Box and a JX500/1D amp (w/remote ****) to power the sub.

The installer used the front passenger side speaker for the source into a line convertor and the power outlet in the boot for amp turn on signal.

I ended up sourcing the speaker and box myself, as the installer wasn't up on shallow mount boxes and wanted to build a custom box ($$$).
Originally, I was going to get the 8" JL Audio Micro Sub, but I couldn't get over the price or the fact it was just a 8" sub. The Atrend Box measures 15"x24"x5" and the MTX sub only needs a mount depth of 3 3/8". The box is a little bit larger than I thought, but it gives a good rumble and I'm happy with the setup.

On a side note: After I had the amp installed, I couldn't wait for the shallow sub setup, so I ran to Walmart bought a Scosche 12" Subwoofer Enclosure and I found a 12" Kenwood KFC-W3013PS on Cragislist. OMG!!! While it took up half of my boot space, this Scosche/Kenwood combo hits loud and hard!!! So hard, that I needed to add some sound deading to the boot hatch to control the rattle. In the end I needed the boot space more than the earth shaking boom, so I finally purchased the shallow sub setup.

2013 CM standard audio here...

I want to replace all 4 speakers, find HU pre out feeds and feed 6 channel amp in rear storage. I'll use this power to drive all speakers in the car, including drivers beneath seats.

1) what are pre out options on standard HU, where else to get front/rear line levels from HU?
2) what is the best way to account for all wiring to new speakers from amp? Use pre-existing? Best wiring routes to rear cargo area from speakers to install new (must seats be removed)?
3) what kind of SQ do we get from the stock HU as a pre/pro?

What wires did you tap into? Where were they located? I will be installing a clean sweep and driving my aftermarket speakers from a 4 channel alpine amp. Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated
