Now - there has always been plenty of information available on NAM on this topic if you just searched a little.
The easiest and cheapest way to hook up an iPod is to get the Aux Input. It's around $40 or so from your dealership, and simple enough to install yourself.
The only catch is that the Navigation system has two wires (for the voice) which must be transferred into the (radio-side) Aux input plug in order to maintain the voice directions.
Another option is the DICE iPod adapter, which, although more expensive, will add other benefits, such as control of the iPod from your steering wheel (assuming you have the Multi-Function Steering Wheel (MFSW)), and the display of track titles on your head unit (if it was manufactured after 04/05).
The unfortunate downside of the DICE is that yes, you can have the ID3 tag data display on the stereo or NAV screen, but at the expense of the navigation info on the NAV screen. I have yet to run into anyone who jumped up and down yelling, "Yes, I want my MP3 ID3 taga date and really, rally want to lose the NAV images!"
