I hope this hasn't already been discussed; my search didn't turn up anything.

Not having been able to drive a MINI yet (since the Boston dealership's test car has been out of commission after being crashed over a month ago), I was wondering how the CD player holds up with the relatively harsh ride of the car. Any problems with CDs skipping when the car hits bumps in the road? With the base radio, I mean. That's one thing that is guaranteed to drive me insane when I'm driving. It's nothing that would make me balk on getting the car or anything like that, of course.

Thanks in advance...

Waiting on a red/white Cooper with one of those incredibly remarkably large sunroofs!

You know, I wondered the same thing before I got my Mini and I can tell you....I listen to CD's 90% of the time I am in the car and they have never skipped once....This is saying alot considering that my street is a big old mess and a very rough ride. I don't think you will have any problems....I haven't!

Cheers!

I have noticed on at least two occasions that a CD has jumped for a moment; but that is from driving nearly 2500 miles.
Both times, it skipped when hitting a bad pothole - not too surprising. And not nice for the driver either

I have a MCS with Sport and Premium package, and I installed a CD changer. With 34 psi in the tires, I did have a skip problem. The tire pressure has now been reduced to 30 psi, and it almost never skips. 30 psi is fine with the runflats, since they have extra stiff sidewalls as it is.

MCS with sport suspension and 17" runflats at 38 PSI.... changer in rear, not securely attached, and very little cd skipping from changer (only when going over potholes, railroad tracks, etc at speed. Headunit has never skipped so far in 3 weeks.

I have had a problem with CDs skipping, but only when playing certain CD-R (burned) discs. Otherwise, nothing. Normally, this sort of problem manifests itself by a unit simply not being able to play burned discs, but in this case, I get a skip problem. Go figure.

I have a BMW 6CD changer installed in the boot. I do get quite a few skips on rough roads. The dash unit NEVER skips maybe it's the vert. vs. horz. install??? The changer can be programed for vert. or horz. install. Maybe I'll take mine off and try it flat in the boot. CLEVELAND OHIO ROADS SUCK poor MINI!!! Over the past 3 yrs. I've bent two rims on chuckholes... I'll have to be very careful with MINI... Later, Paul

I have an MCS with the 17" run-flats, so I have a pretty stiff ride, and I do notice an occasional skip on a very rough roads. Maybe one little hick-up in three discs worth of listening, or less. However, almost all of my car music is on CD-R, so capsfan13 may have a point.

I also notice that one hit won't make it skip, it has to be a surface with many repeated bumps. On the whole, I don't consider it to be a problem.

I would agree about the self-burned CD's v. the commercial ones. It does pretty well overall, but there do tend to be slightly more skips on my burned ones.

I agree...for the most part, no skips, but it has skipped a few times, and I think it was on burned CDs. Why that would make a difference??? Who knows.

I did notice that the cd did skip sometimes in the beginning, but it hasnt recently. Im also very careful on those pothole filled roads. I try to go around them when I can.

CD-Rs are actually made of a different material than CDs. CDs have a foil layer with small pits that represent the music data. CD-Rs have a reflective dye layer that is "burned" non-reflective to represent the data. That's why CD-Rs are often blue colored.

It's not unusual for CD players to have an easier time reading CDs than CD-Rs.

I've had a few skips...didn't pay attention enough to see if it was a burned CD or a store bought one, but I was going over huge craters in the road, so I guess it is to be expected in those cases.

same here ... my burned cds skip a heck of a lot (and i usually listen to those most of the time), while regular cds skip as well but not as much. i rationalize it as the bearable trade-off for the runflats and the 16's.

Hmmm... The way you write, your skipping sounds a bit excessive. ? Even with the 16" runflats my burned cd's only skipped on occasion.

How are the roads where you live? Are they that bumpy?!

On the other hand, my experience has shown vast differences of quality from one brand of CD-R to another. (Verbatim seems great. Office Depot is even good. Computer City are good too (butt ugly though). Maxell sucked. ...my exeperience.)

No skips with the changer but a few with the in-dash unit. Store bought too. I think the player is sensitive to dirty cds or scratched ones.
