Hi all,

Even after doing several searches on this topic, I'm still confused about choosing a replacement for my lower front (non H/K) speakers (the p-side is blown). I'm not an audiophile, but do occasionally like to crank it up a bit. So what I'm after is:
-An easy install
-No need for an amp
-Not too outragious in price

Any advice would be great.

Unless you're going to amp it, I'd get an OEM replacement from your Mini dealer. The OEM speakers are only rated at 15w IIRC, and any aftermarket speaker will be rated much higher than that and thus won't perform that well with the stock head unit.

I'd put a WTB in the Marketplace forum. Maybe someone who's replaced their system will sell you an OEM speaker for cheap.

Many Mini owners have been very satisfied after upgrading to un-amped aftermarket speakers. Do a bit of research here on NAM and you'll find Infinities, Polks, and Alpines being driven by the factory head unit without adding an amp. These are inexpensive (under $100), high effeciency (91-93db) speakers. Owners claim that they provide a signifcant improvement over the stock speakers.

 

True, he can certainly do that. But the aftermarket speakers will not perform as well as they would if driven at the wattage they were designed for.

 

I'll be looking to do a speaker upgrade also. If you look at the effeciency's and keep the numbers high the stock non HK unit should work just fine. Is there replacements for the little tweaters on the doors too?

 

The only caveat is the MINI's non-HK speakers are 5 ohm instead of the normal 4 ohm. Putting a 4 ohm speaker on a receiver that's designed for 5 ohms will cause it to run hot and possibly destroy itself.

All of the major brands offer a low end woofer/tweeter set in addition to their more expensive pairs of components that would need amping.

 

Maybe a 1 ohm resistor with a 4 ohm speaker to make 5 would do the trick?

 

5 ohm and 4 ohm rated speakers are close enough to be considered
interchangeable. The impedance actually varies quite a bit at different
frequencies for all speakers.

 

I was wondering about that.I'll be looking for a set of speakers nothing like Polks or Infintitys- the expensive ,presise speakers seem to demand more power. I think something loose,cheap and efficient will still be better than stock.

 

Are there Mini venders that have addressed the replacement speaker situation? Crutchfield does not list the Mini's speaker replacements .

But if you have a non HK with Nav, no speakers come up, why is that? What does the Navigation system have to do with speakers?
