Alpine Head units - R vs North american?
Can we run european 'R' version of alpine head units in our northamerican mini coopers?
I miss my steering wheel controls, and am aware the R versions are easier to make work properly
Aside from the built in steering wheel controls is there any other real differences between R and Non R units?

I have an Alpine CDA-9857 and the PAC-SWI ALP
The PAC does a good job of controlling the alpine head unit. easy install. I wish I could help you with the "R" info, but I'm sure MikeTheMini will be along soon to clear it up for you.
I would assume that you'd have trouble converting FM format to US spec.

bah never even thought about radio signals..
damn it.
I have a 9847, colours match perfect, 3 rca outs and it works like a charm.
I just dont like the inability to make the MFSW controls work.
I need to buy a deck for my other car. I was thinking of moving the 9847 from the MINI-> other car but I need to get something with all the options my 9847 has AND MFSW controls

Actually I don't think it would be a problem. In the USA, we use on the odd parts of the freq but in Europe they use even and odd. The OEM radio in the MINI is the same, they can just go in and tell it USA mode so that the even freqs are dropped making searching easier. FM is FM, there is no converting....
