Aux Input Level

I just installed the aux input and the job is as easy as everyone says. One question - is everyone setting the aux level to 5 in order to have the volume approximate radio level? I am setting the volume to max on my nano and 5 on the aux input. Is there an advantage to using a lower setting? Thanks.

Keep in mind that using a headphone jack to connect to the Aux input will lower the quality of the signal, because the headphone jack is amplified.

I use a line-out adapter on my 60GB iPod Photo, which provides an non-amplified signal to the Aux input. I run my Aux level at 2... I did some back-to-back comparisons with the same album on CD, and 2 seemed to be the closest match in my case.

As for how to get a line-out jack on an iPod (or a Nano), here:

SendStation - Products - PocketDock Line Out USB

I have one and it works beautifully.

Bonus - if you use a line-out adapter, you can set the headphone volume on the iPod all the way to zero... it might extend your battery life a little bit, since the headphone amplifier won't be sucking any juice.

Edge is right, using the headphone jack degrades the sound quality. Here's a good way to get the line-out from the dock connector. Only $7.99 and integrated with a 4' retractable cord. I'm using aux input level 3 with an iPod mini.

I've got one of these:

Not only does it charge your Ipod, but it has a volume adjustment and works through the dock connector (far better sound quality). Got it for $30 shipped from J&R.

i've found that if you set the aux level higher than the volume of your cd player you can get distortion out of the tweaters on the h/k. so for me thats at AUX level +2

and yes its better to use a line out from you mp3 player to aux input and turn off all effects (eq, bass enhancer, etc...)

i have an iaudio m3 and that's what gets the cleanest signal for me.

I have one of these: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/tuneflexnano/

It doesn't have a miniplug on the dock so I'm guessing it does the same thing.

So, how do you set the Aux input level?

Press the button with the music note several times until the display shows AUX LEV, then turn the volume **** to set the level (0 to 5).

I keep the dock for my old 40G iPod in the cupholder, run the Aux from the lineout on the dock and Belkin's auto power from the lighter to the dock. So the iPod just pops out when I need it. (No, it's never popped out during travel.)

rkw,

Thanks for the reply, but that doesn't seem to work for me. Just pressing the note button toggles through bass, trebel, balance and fade. Pushing and holding the button gives me tonlin, speedvol, and nav.

Scott, my display cycles through BASS, TREB, FAD, BAL, AUX LEV. I have a 2006 MCC (9/05 build). Maybe older head units don't have the feature.

Thanks folks. I've tried starting from the radio and the ipod mode (I guess this is technically the cd changer as that is the plug it is hooked to) and always get the same menu options.

Oh well.

OK 90STX any luck??

Sorry to rehash an old thread - Finally installed an Aux on my 05MCS Now that it's in I also can not adjust the AUX volume level. Instructions to use note button do not seem to work on 05/06 models? Searches here and MINI2 have come up with no ideas yet. Seems 05 + have the problem.

Other than aftermarket connectors with line out volume controls any way to set AUX level volume on the OEM head unit?

Thanks!

Never got it to work. Since then, I've gone to the HD radio/ipod adaptor unit and have good sound quality.

Aux volume level works on my 9/2005 build (I already posted above). There was definitely a change in the headunits sometime in mid-2005. They gained the ability to play MP3 discs and display text. Aux input level might have been added at that time.
