MINI iPod Adapter and the AUX input

MINI iPod Adapter and the AUX input

Can I have both on my 06 MC with HK? Right now, I have the iPod adapter but would like to have the AUX port as well.

I've searched the archive, but didn't come up with a definitive answer. Can somebody help with this mystery?

Yes, you can have both. The Aux imput uses a dedicated port on the back of the HU.

OK now I'm confused - been reading up on the various Ipod hookups . . .
I thought the factory adapter did include a connector to the rear of the stereo head unit - i.e. just like the aux input cable but including hideaway cradle, charging capability, etc.????

I know that both have connectors to the back of the head unit. I just wasn't sure if they shared the same port. Looks like they don't.

Hope I'm not hijacking this thread but my MA (Mike Snyder at Classic Mini)
emailed me that I could NOT have both an AUX input and the OEM iPod adapter on my '06 MCSC with H/K
would someone know of a definitive source to which I can refer him--I think the installation is happening this week.
thanks
Caroline

The iPod adapter uses the connections that were originally intended for the CD changer. They are separate from the aux input.

Here's someone who has both: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=63421

FWIW..

I found this little guy a while back at circuit city:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=149006

This provides power to charge your ipod through the dock connector, *and* provides a dedicated, adjustable preamp built in with 1/8" line out connector. In the case of the MINI, just run a 1/8" stereo jack from the belking unit to the aux in, and then simply plug your ipod into the dock connector whenever you want to use it.

The advtanges are that it's only 1 cable to plug into the ipod, you get cleaner sound (by using a dedicated preamp instead of the headphone plug on your ipod), and accidentally bumping the clickwheel doesn't cause the volume to explode over you speakers! (volume is controlled from the MINI head unit).

Anyway, it's $40 and has worked well for me.

Otherwise, look into the Ice Link adapter, as the OEM ipod dock is pretty useless...

I had the Belkin Auto Kit in my last MINI. I highly recommend it for those with the AUX input.

I got the MINI iPod adaptor this time which is nice, too. It was a little limiting at first, but now I'm comfortable with the interface.

I want the AUX input as well, just in case I want to plug in something other than an iPod.

I want to mention that when powering the iPod from the cigarette lighter, some people have problems with the aux input randomly disconnecting. If this happens, it is caused by electrical noise, and you should add a "ground loop isolator" from Radio Shack or some other source. Search the forums for ground loop isolator, and you will find many references.
