A couple years ago my factory radio died. Wouldn't turn on. I checked the fuses--in the fuse panel and on the back of the radio. Ended up installing an aftermarket double-din radio that worked well, but I never really liked the way it looked, particularly the black blank plates on the speedometer. I also didn't like how the Chime Retention Module sounded.
I stumbled across a YouTube video yesterday where a guy fixed his by finding an open very tiny SMD fuse on the main PCB.
This morning I pulled the radio off the shelf and tore it apart. Sure enough, mine had the same exact open fuse. I soldered a bypass around this open fuse and put it all back together. Radio works fine now! I reinstalled the radio and removed the aftermarket unit. I'm quite happy now because I think the factory appearance is so much better. Doesn't sound quite as good, but I mostly listen to podcasts anyway, and I'm planning to do the channel swap, and I hear that helps.
Just wanted to share my happy discovery and maybe if someone out there has a dead radio that they can't figure out how to fix, maybe you have the same bad fuses and me and my YouTube friend:

Congrats and well done!
I agree on the factory look. When I was looking for aftermarket CarPlay solution for R56, which I previously owned, I refused to put a unit under stock speedo for exact that reason. Ended up buying used factory speedo from MINI with navigation screen and fitting double din touch screen stereo in it, so I've got CarPlay support and maintained factory look, which was important to me.
