Dissapointed with NAV system.

If you aren't on a major road, or in a bigger city, it won't let you do any routing. It will give you a message that you are off the digital map and stop giving you turn by turn instructions!! It will however, tell you when you do arrive. My $200 handheld Magellan does better routing than this $1700 system. Is this normal??????????????

First zoom in the map to at least 1/4 mile scale (or 450 yards) and see if the road you're driving on is even showing up. There are errors on the CDs and DVDs, and it is possible that the road you're on isn't on the disk. If the message you're hearing is "You are not on a digitized road" then the road you're on isn't on the disk...

If the road you're driving on is infact on the disk then you may have a different problem. I've just started having this happen intermittently with my CD based system. The problem however seems to be location specific so I suspect I'll have a heck of a time reproducing it for the dealer...

The roads are there. This happens on county roads also.
If I'm not routing and just in "Map" mode, I get "correct dest guidance not available" in blue text across the screen.

this is normal

yeah, if it says "correct destination guidance not avail." then it is normal. These are the "back" roads that are on the cd but they do not have house numbers on them and thus you cannot get directions to "314 back road" but you can get directions to "back road". If you zoom in to 250yrds or less, then you will see the road and any turns onto new roads (for ex. if you have to go from "back road" onto "old back road" it will not verbally tell you, you have to look at the map on screen to see that.) Now yes that is annoying but my first cd didn't have any of my local back roads so I got absolutely no directions, but now I have them, just no house numbers. Hope this helps.

You may also want to check the year of the disk and see if there has been updates to yoru area since then (I think Navtech does the map disks).

If you think it is acting abnormally you might want to take a photo of the messages you get on the screen and give them to the service dept when you take the car in.

I don't know if this will help, but there were software updates for the nav on my BMW, and I did find that they could help improve performance of the navigation. Ask your rep about it when you bring it in.

Best of luck

Yes, I agree...Mini nav sucks I've been at my new construction for over two years and I'm still not on the map nor does Mini provide any updates...pretty lame for that amount of money. Still, I love it

Based on the comments above I'd definately say that the problem is with the disk. Not so much that the disk is bad, just that Navteq doesn't seem to always provide the most complete information to MINI on the map disks...

I never had this issue with my last map data CD (that came with the car) but it had gaping holes in the map data. The updated disk I'm now using has much better coverage, but I'm now also seeing that same message occasionally. Just as weird is that I don't always get that message in the same places...

My biggest beef with the Nav system has always been the data which is supplied by Navteq. Even more frustrating is that Navtaq supplies the maps for Yahoo!Maps, which has better map data than what is on the nav disks...
