Question about HK speaker or amp issue

Hello, I have a 2005 MINI S with the HK sound system. The stereo system sounded great until about a week ago when I noticed that my drivers side door speaker started to sound funky (it would get "fuzzy" or sound blown during particular parts of songs that may have a lower bass happening). It's not the end of the world, but it is bugging me because I like to play my system loud and I'd like to address the issue. I read on 2 different sites that this may not be a speaker issue but an issue with the amp. What are your thoughts? All the other speakers are fine - would a bad amp only mess with one speaker? Thanks in advance for the help.

It could if only one channel of the amp is bad. The easiest way to check is switch the door speakers and see if it's still bad on the same side. I think the speakers are 2 ohm if you go aftermarket. For an aftermarket amp, a few people have used a JL Audio 6 channel that's small enough to fit in the factory location and be stable with a 2 ohm load.

Thanks so much, I will give that a try. Now I need to figure out the easiest way to pull the speakers out without causing damage or taking up hours out of my weekend...

Most likely a blown speaker. When the HK amp goes bad, the symptoms are usually worse.

Aftermarket replacement speaker is really not an option for the HK system. The HK amp compensates for the HK speaker performance by adding equalization and crossover cutoff to the output signal. If connected to an aftermarket speaker with different response, the wrong corrections would be applied.

Thanks so much for the response. I really appreciate it. I'll order a new HK speaker and keep my fingers crossed that this is the issue.

I recently replaced my door speakers for these...which are basically HK (I believe they own Infinity or vice-versa). Works great
