I just signed up to this forum.

I own a 2006 Mini Cooper S that came with the standard steering wheel. I was wondering if I purchased a steering wheel with the audio controls to replace the standard one my car has, will it just work with the audio system or is it more complicated than that?

Also, I've been looking to get an AUX adapter to my audio system installed so that I could play music from my MP3 player. Any recommendations on how to go about this?

If you have cruise on the steering wheel it will just work. Some cars with no MFSW will need coding.

 

Have a look at this thread page 2 has a PDF on the retrofit process, note that this is for adding cruise control.
I've always wondered how much simpler it would be just for the stereo controls (and no cruise)

I have a 2005 Convertible and ended up replacing the factory stereo with a Kenwood one that does bluetooth / USB input and I can also do handsfree on the iPhone now. Much better sound and it was pretty easy to install.

 

As the technology has improved far batter than the Last decade. There are various ways that you made changes as you required. Like they uses the Shift Panels and Shift Lights, Digital Tachometers for this purpose mostly .
