CD Player Mod?

Hey all.

Just about one week into my Mini and one thing keeps gnawing on me: the stock CD player. I generally listen to the radio and when I don't I plan to just use the USB or AUX in. So, every time I see the player taking up space, I can't help wondering what else I could do with the space.

Seems like this would be an ideal place for a tablet or smartphone dock...or anything more useful than its current use. Any ideas?

Well as the CD player is physically part of the Head Unit you can not just remove it. Removing the Fascia would make the area a little flatter but then you would actually have an open hole in the dash. This applies to all Gen 2 units without NAV

BTW what year is your car. This would also help us in getting you moving in the right direction as the there are some other differences in the 2007-2010 and 2011 and up cars.

What would also help us is what model (coop, clubman, roadster etc) you have as that also make a difference in what is in the car for the stereo system.

more details...

Sorry about the lack of details. I was really just focused on whether or not the whole idea was crazy.

It's a 2012 R56, Spice Orange (was town between Orange and Hot Chocolate). At some point, I'm thinking of getting one of the Proclip set-ups for a Google Nexus 7 and then using it as a NAV, music player and link to a Bluetooth OBD2. Still every time I see the CD Player, I ask myself if anything else is possible with the space.

Thanks folks!

So I am guessing you dont have NAV or MINI Connected in your car.

So with that info unfortunately there is not much you can do unless you replace the whole head unit and that is a lot more work as the head unit is what drives all the display on the speedo.

But i have to agree that is some wasted space if you never use the cd player. I use mine maybe 2-3 times a year and find it nice to have. Some of the MINI runs or adventures I go on the person running it makes CD's of music for our listening enjoyment. Oh and if you ever go up Mt Washington they give you a CD of the history to listen to as you go up and come back down.
