Hi I am getting my mini in a few weeks (awaiting transport) and I have some questions for anyone who has the NAV system in their MINI. My first is is it possible to get an updated cd for the system every year from the dealer. ( i know roads change and stuff). My second question is, does the mini logo display on the screen when its not being used. (i remember my dealer mentioning something about this but im not sure) thanks in advance. motor on

There is mention in the owner's manual of updated CDs, but it's kind of nebulous about where you get them, how much they cost, etc. As for the map CD itself, I took delivery of my Mini S without the CD, as the dealer was out of them. I've been promised one via mail in the next couple of weeks. Hence, I can't give you an idea how the system performs.

The Mini logo only displays on the Nav screen for theperiod between unlocking the doors and starting the ignition.

It's been so long now since I read all the information about my NAV cd updates (3 months - but I still find myself wishing that it was a DVD based system.....

Sorry to mislead you. No, I don't believe that yours will be DVD based from the factory. The company that makes the software (NavTech) claims that updates are based on demand. I am somewhat assuming that a DVD system might also have more cities digitized. ? I don't know for sure about that.

Mini2Go,

Can you tell me some more about this? I live in Pittsburgh and I'm planning to pick up a Mini, with Nav, next spring. I was expecting detailed maps for every area of the city. What were you missing?

I really need to be more specific when I make a post

Biomech, most of the time when I find non-digitized areas it's really not IN the city - it is around it in the outlying areas. I actually live in the North in Zelienople (above Cranberry) and it is only partially covered for instance. Neither my parents' nor my in-laws' areas are covered - each place an hour out of the city (one north and one east).

I've programmed my house into the address book and - now that I have Molly - when I have time I will turn down a side road I've never been on and let her guide me home. It gets frustrating when you hit the "edge" of the digital map.

However, now that I'm discussing... I find the system particularly easy to use on highways and in less congested areas. It can still be a little difficult to not miss turns in city traffic. I especially hate when Molly says "take the second turn on the right" when you're in the city - you never know what she considers the second turn until it's almost too late! Maybe I just need to "practice" with her more

Mini2Go,

Thanks for the extra information. I live in the South Side and I spend most of my time in the city, although my in-laws live in Butler and I do motor up your way if I need a Krispy Kreme.

I've found that my nav system works best in the city, but is a bit sparing outside. Out near Delmont it only knows the major roads and hardly any side roads. It is also a bit sparing in the north suburbs.

Does anyone know if the new system is going to be DVD, does that mean I won't be able to get update cd's for my system? *trembles with fear*

Although I have the CD that covers Texas, I did a search for Chicago and it still shows a few of the roads across the US w/o having that actual CD. I need to call the dealer and find out where to get the other Cds. He didn't tell me anything about that.
One thing I really like is how the computer system is displayed and also in the NAV mode you can see parks off the main path that you didn't know were there!

Hi Mini2Go, I just wanted to say that my car is exactly like yours (colors and options), and I have same feelings about the nav - good to have although frustrating at times in the city.

But I love my car to death, and the NAV is agreat plus, as far as I am concern, plus it gets the speedo in front of me, which I actually like.

Is there some sort of a dim feature for the nav system? Or does it just dim a little when you turn on your headlights?

If there is a manual dimming feature, I haven't yet found it - it does automatically dim when you turn on your lights.

Gomini,

Uh oh. I might have to find some special personalization option now to stay unique.

I'm thinking about different wheels (maybe with a set of snow tire), but I can't decide.
