How to properly install door speakers

The voice coil on one the the HK door speakers got pinched last year and I've been driving around without that speaker for a while now. I finally bought a Polk db6501 set but when I installed the new woofer I barely get any sound. I felt around the edge of the speaker and there is tons of air flowing around it. I guess that I need some sort of insulation between the speaker and the door but in all of the posts I've never seen anyone mention that it's needed. I just want to make sure that is the problem before I go spending $ putting dynamat around the speakers. I've seen people talk about creating MDF adapters but I wouldn't think that MDF would conform to the door any better than the plastic mounting ring.

Not sure what you mean by "pinched" (did it do something illegal and get arrested? ). There are range of possible problems here. Post a pic so we can see how you mounted the driver. If there are large gaps or holes between/around driver and baffle it will cause cancellation, but unless you did something really funky with the mounting I doubt that is your issue.

I suspect that the problem lies with the signal the speaker is (or isn't) receiving, or that it is defective. How much sound is "hardly any"?

Keep in mind that's a full-range coaxial speaker you've attached to a speaker that only gets lower frequencies from the amp. So if the "hardly any" sound is in reference to a lack of highs from that speaker, that's why.

Do you have an unnecessary spacer? I just changed out the speakers in my MINI and the spacer that was given to me by Crutchfield didn't fit, for one, and two, wasn't need. I fit the speaker in with the bracket that was in the Polk box instead of using that Metra or Scosche part.
