Earsplitting squeal-In desperate need of help!
Yesterday I was trundling along in my MINI when suddenly my left speaker emitted an earsplitting high pitched squeal. This was not a tone, or a whine, or a buzz, but a smoke detector, weapons-grade electronic scream.
Turning off the stereo did not help, to my horror. Neither did thumping the door and bellowing at the car, but I expected that.
Seconds later the scream halted, a little static (which sounded like something crawling around in my door), and then silence. I turned the music back on and kept driving, but every now and again the scream returned. It varies in duration--sometimes one second, sometimes five, but it is always very loud and very high.
Input did not matter, whether CD, aux, or radio. I have the stock audio system, no electronic alarm, and have a GROM USB input using the cd changer wiring (more later).
It didnt happen on my evening commute, but returned this morning. I mean this sound is so loud it really isn't safe to drive the car.
I unplugged/plugged the GROM system, which uses stock connectors. No change.
I feel like it gets "triggered" when I go over a bump (runflats, 17s) and maybe when I have my window open. Happens (less?) with the window closed, though.
I'm going to lose my mind. I have searched and found these threads, but not only are they old, nobody seems to have found a solution for non-HK people. Any advice? It sounds like a loose wire, if you want my opinion...but why wouldn't turning the sound system off fix it?

Well I popped off the door card; unplugging the tweeter helped but I still got the annoying sound from the other speaker. Is the whole left channel screwed?
I replaced the door card and it did it once, then made a beep, then no audio at all, instead of just tamping down the radio sound in total. Still had head unit display.
