Dice Silverline Duo unique install
Hey guys, I just got my Dice Silverline Duo installed and since I did it in a rather unique location, I figured I'd share the details. I'll post pictures of the install if people want to see, but I didn't have my camera yesterday when I installed it (it's back at Nikon getting fixed
)
Anyhoo, I want to use the system with my iPad occasionally as well as with my iPod touch most of the time. Since no one makes a decent car docking solution for the iPad (/sarcasm), I needed to find a better place to put the iPod connector that can hold an iPod as well as the added bulk of my iPad. After a bit of thinking, I chose to put the connector in the door pocket. It worked surprisingly well.
I have the cable running from the CD changer connector in the boot, under the back seat cushion (under which I found the emergency boot release, which I never knew existed) over to the driver's side of the backseat area. I then ran it down the edge of the trim until I could get it under the door seal, where it makes the run up to the front of the car. I mounted the actual unit on the inside of the dash, in the big void under the steering column (no, I didn't interfere with the tilt, I checked). The unit is velcroed into place there, so it won't move but I can take it out if need be.
The fun part was running the iPod connector from the door pocket to the unit. Removing the door panel was surprisingly easy once I stopped being a pansy and actually gave it a decent pull (after removing the screws of course). I had originally planed to route the cable through the wiring tunnel which supported the controls for the locks and the speakers, but observation showed that this wouldn't be possible. There wasn't enough room for the wire in there, let alone for the connector I'd have to fit through. Also, the car side of that wiring tunnel is seemingly inaccessible from the passenger compartment - I never did find where it terminated. I settled for cutting a small hole in the door-side boot of that rubber tunnel through which I could pass the end of the cable. I dremeled a small hole in the bottom of the door pocket, passed the smaller end of the cable through it, then through the door behind the window motor and through my hole in the wiring boot. I ran it up the side of the door frame until it could go into the crack between that little snap-in panel there and the rest of the dash. From there, it just connects to the unit mounted under there.
Everything works brilliantly and I love being able to listen to my iPod through my stereo. Hope that made some sense, and helps a few people! If anyone wants pics, just let me know and I'll get some as soon as I can.
