Replace Driving Light switch with USB?
Hi All,
After a few hours of searching without a definitive answer, I thought I would offer up this question to see if anyone has done what I am trying to do and can help me. Actually I am sure someone has probably done this, the question is will I get lucky enough to get an answer...
Anyway - I have an 03 MCS that came with the factory driving light kit installed. The switch was located on the knee bolster, left side of the steering wheel. The first mod I made was to remove the driving lights because A) I didn't need them and B) I didn't like the look on my car. So for the last year or so I have been driving with a gaping hole in the knee bolster - about 1"X1.5" or something like that...
My plan is to buy a cravenspeed flexpod scissor universal mount so I have have my iphone 4 in plain sight and use it efficiently as a portable navigation device. I have an aftermarket head unit that allows me to use my phone as an ipod, navigation device and phone through the car speakers using bluetooth, but I figured I would try to kill two birds with one stone - get rid of the gaping hole in my knee bolster and also have a solution to charge my ipod more conveniently while it is mounted. My head unit also has 2 usb ports on the back of it and I have one in the glove box, so I want to have the other one accessible on the left side of the steering wheel where that hole is.
So here is the question. Does anyone know of a good USB type solution that would fit in the existing hole left by the driving light switch that would look clean? Aside from fabricating one which I don't have the time for. Something that would look like it was always part of the car. Your help is much appreciated! I will try to post a picture of what I am trying to describe here later so it's easier to understand.

Not sure of a USB solution, but there are likely hundreds of knee bolsters in garages across the US as people replaced that part with the Euro parcel shelf. Unfortunately the OEM location for the driving light switch isn't in a location that makes it good for much else. You could also try Way Motor Works if you just want to get rid of the hole.
Yeah, I thought about just buying a knee bolster, but decided against it in case I ever decide to add back the driving lights. Plus, I have pretty much always wanted to use the hole as a usb slot (maybe a dual slot)... I guess I will just have to fabricate something. I am surprised no one here has done something similar...
