Navigation & Audio Headunit installation problem.
Headunit installation problem.
I might just be being cheap but when I installed my HU the bracket it slips into was basically useless since the two arms were bent out.
Has anyone used self tapping screws in place of the two top screws to hold the headunit in? The holes for those two top screws were stripped and I have tried to use wire insulation around the threads but only to fail again. The HU now just can be moved around freely..
Any solutions or prior experiences dealing with this?
I may just use self tapping galvanized screws in place of the ones there now.
Thank,
Christopher Whitlock.

It sounds like slightly thicker sheetmetal screws would definitely do the trick.
Not sure what you're trying to say about the "two arms" on the "bracket", and being "cheap". ...Is the "bracket" you're refering to a DIN sleeve? Are the two "arms" the tabs that click into the sides of the head unit it was designed for? By "cheap", do you mean you're trying to use a mangeled up used din sleeve?
Anyway, here's what you're supposed to do: Take the new aftermarket head unit's included DIN sleeve, and slide it into the MINI-specific plastic mounting adapter plate as far as it will go. Bend whichever tabs are necessary to tightly secure the sleeve within the plate. Now, slide the head unit into the sleeve/plate assembly until it "clicks" into place. Then (having gained access to the mounting screws), connect and mount the whole thing into the car.

And please don't screw self-tapping screws into your head-unit. It sounds like that's what you're wanting to do, and to risk ruining a perfectly good HU so you don't have to buy a new sleeve (or get one for free from the company that made your HU) is silly. I would be surprised if a new sleeve would cost you more than $5.
