My GPS mounting location
After thinking long and hard about where to mount my Tomtom, I decided the best place would be the space directly below the bank of toggle switches. I looked at a lot of the various brackets including the ones that sit near the speedometer and everthing I saw was too 'in my face'. Although the location below the toggles looks nice aesthetically (imho) I was really concerned about signal reception. After driving around a couple days with the gps just sitting down there to test for signal strength, I was really surprised that there were no reception issues whatsoever. The Tomtom I have uses the standard 'Easyport' mount.

I took the supplied mounting disk and stuck it in place just under the toggles. The adhesive is surprisingly strong. I let the tape cure for a day before installing the Easymount and GPS. I am very happy with the results and the GPS can swing up far enough that the GPS is very difficult to see outside the car by prying eyes. The unit sits solidly. I ran it a couple of months before I hardwired the power in since using the cigarette lighter as a power source did not allow for the unit to swing up.

I am pleased with the results. This seems to be the perfect spot for my 4.3" Tomtom. Any bigger and it might hit the lighter but it clears it perfectly. Also, the silver rim of the Tomtom matches the downtubes nicely.

Are you concerned that you have to take your eyes so far off the road to see it?
I mount my Garmin in the line of sight next to the tach, but on the left so it doesn't block my view forward for this reason...

Very similar to how mine sat when I was happiest with it (mine was more facing up out of the cup holder as the Garmin mounts work differently). Being that far off the line of sight never really bothered me, I rarely used it and if I did it was auditory directions, and I'd have to stop to plug anything into that touch screen anyways. I used the past tense because I took the GPS out in the spring and haven't really looked back since.
When I used my Garmin in that area I needed to use my external GPS antenna for reliable signal coverage, do you run something similar with the TomTom or are the newer units that good at pulling in signal?

MiniDave, I mostly rely in verbal directions When u had it suction cup mounted to the windshield I found I rarely looked at the screen but your point is a ver good one for those considering this mounting location.
Motor On, out of 5 full bars on the signal display, I'm guessing I'm usually down by 1 bar.
