2003 Navigation system problem.

I've not purchased this car yet, but should have it by Tuesday. It's a 2003 S. The owner tells me the naviagtion systems goes on and off and he suspects it's a dirty CD? He tells me it's under the seat in the CD controll box. I'd like for it to work, but it's not a deal breaker. For those that have the Nav. system, does this sound logical or more like a deeper problem. It worked while I test drove the car, but went off after about 10 mins. Thanks.

I have a 04 with the Nav and had a few issues with it, having the DVD cleaned may or may not help, the firmware in the system may also need to be upgraded. You also need to see what year is on the disk as it may be outdated.
Also FYI this is a Firest gen car and the Moderator may move this thread to that area.
good luck with the 03 and Happy Motoring

Thanks. Is the firmware upgrad done the same way a Blue Ray player is updated, buy going on a site and downloading an ISO file?

Jack I am not positive of how to do that, I took my car to Mini and they updated it for free in about 10 Minutes,it added a few features and was much easier to read with better graphics.

You need to find out exactly what he means. Does the screen go on and off? Doesn't display a map? Trouble with reading the map CD or loses positioning?

You could try cleaning the map CD. There are lots of CD cleaning and scratch removal products on the market. The laser is also known to sometimes wear out. The laser itself is inexpensive to replace if you are comfortable with soldering and working with electronics. If the entire CD drive or the entire unit needs to be replaced, repair can get expensive .

To update firmware, you can download and burn an ISO image of the updater CD (look here), or buy it from a dealer for less than $10 (part# 01 59 0 141 891), or have the dealer do it for you. Updating is just a matter of inserting the updater disc and waiting a couple of minutes.

I've got an (feb) '03 mcs with a navigation issue I can't figure out...for some reason the voice (usa/gb) does not work...I've adjusted all of the settings to max volume, made sure nothing was on mute but nothing works...if I punch in an address and start driving, if the radio is on it "blanks" out (ie. no sound) as if the nav voice was speaking but again no voice...any ideas? Is a software/firmware upgrade needed? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sounds like the Nav input at the back of the stereo may have come loose. I'd remove the head unit and confirm that all the plugs are making good contact.
