iPod G3 turns off at random

We have a 2005 R52, H/K HU with a dealer-installed iPod adapter (the $200 kind). My G3 iPod works fine for various amounts of time before turning off, whereas my iPod Mini works exactly as advertised.

I've read other threads that indicate G3's should work with the OEM adapter from this era, so I believe this set-up should work. I have made sure that the iPod is fully up-to-date with firmware revisions (as commented in another thread), so that *shouldn't* be the problem. I haven't found a technical term to describe what happens: unloading itself - disconnecting - turning off - scramming - no disc - whatever. But I know it doesn't make sense to have to unplug & replug the iPod every 10 to 20 minutes to keep listening to it.

I realize that I'm dealing with "out of date" iPod technology here, but I'd love for this set-up to work for another year or two until I break down and buy a new iPod or iPhone. Any thoughts?
