hk: Subwoofer? and best aftermarket Nav?

Hey All,

Just joined as I just ordered my first Mini: 2010 Clubman with the Premium Package. I thought long and hard about the Nav system (my current car has a fantastic aftermarket in-dash Pioneer nav/sound system) and the stereo. The Mini Nav system seems to be outrageously under-featured and over-priced. However, it also seems like the HK stereo does most of what I need, so I went ahead and got that. I do have a couple of questions about sound and GPS, though:
  • Would the expense ($150) of having my current sub-woofer transferred/installed into the boot of my Mini worthwhile? In other words, is the bass response good or does it need some help?
  • What's the best aftermarket GPS system for the Mini's unusual interior configuration? Is there a particular brand that people have had good success with? I'm inclined to pick up a Garmin 765 but I want a decent, ignition-wireable GPS that can be mounted in a very sturdy fashion.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm so stoked for my new car...I can hardly wait till April.

Cheers,

James

I just ordered a mount from www.gominigo.com. It is similar to the one that Mini sells except it doesn't hard wire your GPS to the ignition. But it is a lot cheaper and can be used with a variety of GPS brands, and be used on either side of the tach.

They make alot of different mounts for mounting gps or iPod in mini's that look good and are sturdy, but personally the hk is not worth it you can spend the same amount or less upgrading the standard system and have a better radio and if something happens to the hk system it is useless to try to integrate aftermarket radio or speakers because it will just not sound good and will have less functionality (and I promise something will go wrong with the hk my amp quit at 55,000 and both front 6.5" at about 65,000 $900 for the amp and $150 a piece for speakers but I luckily had a extended warranty that covered them). Not saying you made a terrible because the hk sounds great just impossible to integrate into

Yours is a 1st gen HK system. The OP is talking about the new ones. I have the new HK in my 2010 and I think it sounds great. Alot better than my 08 with the upgraded HIFI system.

Regarding aftermarket Nav, I had the 765 in mine and used the Kuda mount next to the speedo. I had it hardwired into the lighter and rna the output into the aux in on the MIJI to use the MP3 player.it all worked well. I recently went to the Nuvi 5000 for the bigger screen. I then had a back up camera wired up also since the Nuvi 5000 has an input for that.

Same here...I had an 03' with the HK and thought it was great, but the new one sounds even better. I already think it has way too much bass.
