I am taking delivery of my new mini shortly and the dealership has agreed to install an Aux audio input for me. However I am worried, due to the fact that the standard location for the input is inside the glove compartment.

I am worried that the only way I can connect my ipod in the cup holder to the aux input in the glove compartment is if the glove compartment is open. Thus I am asking for adice from people who have the aux input in the glove compartment. Can you run a cable from the aux input to outside the glove compartment without having the glove compartment open?

I really appreciate any help on this matter.

Thanks

I have the exact same setup as you. Dealership installed the AUX. input on the left wall inside the glove box. iPod sits snug in the driver's side cup holder. The cable can be run easily from the inside of the glovebox with the door closed down behind the downtubes and plug into the iPod. I highly recommend the Belkin Auto Charger. Works perfectly, and the mini plug cable plugs into it instead of the top of your iPod. You're gonna love it man

The cable runs between the door and the frame, doesn't hamper the movement of the door at all and the cable is not being rubbed away either. I suppose if you had some Monster thick cable it may rub .....
Cool on the Black, I hope you like washing It's part of my weekly ritual now....

Okay, I guess I still cant quiet picture the path of the cable. Probably because I dont have the car infront of me to fiddle with.

At least, however I know that it is possible, which makes me feel better.

Hmmm...Perhaps saying "door and frame" made it sound like the car door. I meant the cable runs between glove box door and it's frame. There is a large enough gap that it can sit in between without causing any friction. When you get it you'll know exactly what I'm trying to say.

It works out well, and the cable doesn't have any problem winding around:

Glove box open:

Glove box almost closed:

Glove box completely closed:

Ready to go!

Hope this helps...

Thanks Tago

DOes the cable get 'pinched' or squashed at all?

How thick is the cable you are using?

Thanks

It doesn't get pinched because it will curve vertically upwards as it winds it way out horizontally. Otherwise, it would need to make a hard, right-angled turn.

>>How thick is the cable you are using?

About 3mm wide.

I had the same concerns you did, and did a dry run with the cable before drilling into the glove box. It worked out well.

You're guaranteed to have a great time. Did you buy local, or do you have a road trip home in your future?

the dealership is about 60 miles away, so a little road trip. mostly highway, so good chance to test out 6th gear.

I put in the Parcel shelf myself, and while I was under there, I plugged in the Aux input myself, and then put the AUX input jack in the back of the Parcel shelf. This way, I have my IPOD sitting on the parcel shelf and plugged in the the AUX input with no wires dangling. I have on order a retractable mini to mini cable so I can pull my ipod out and have it sit on my seat if i want to reset sometning, and then the cable will retract itself as I put it back neatly on the Parcel shelf

I've been looking for a retractable mini to mini cable as well. Where did you find/order one from? Thanks for the info.

To hnbrown.....got the retractable mini to mini plug tonite........seems to work fine....I have my portable cassette player ( soon to be an Ipod) plugged in on the parcel shelf and with this cable, I can pull out the unit and have it sit on the front passenger seat and then give it a lil tug and it retracts neatly all the way back on the parcel shelf...if your interested, I can give you the details of where to get it and the part number...I will be testing it out tomorrow more fully

Thanks umberto. After your last message, I found the site you mentioned: http://pc-mobile.net/treo600.htm. I also found this site: http://www.ziplinq.com/retractable-cable-audio.html. It appears to be a matter of color and when zip linq actually has the retractable calbe in stock. It looks like the Pc-Mobile cable will be cheaper.

I looked up the zip ling site and I don't think they offer a mini to mini cable.......the PC-Mobile works pretty good...I used it today and it works well.....it has a center base with the two mini plugs that pull out of it from each side....it says DO NOT HOLD THE BASE !! ....you just pull the wires out from the plug, or in this case, leave the one end plugged in to the aux jack and just pull out the ipod or whatever and leave it on your seat....the cord then stays locked so the cord doesn't pull annoyingly back..then you give it a further tug, like on a window shade, and it recoils nicely all the way in...exceedingly cool...good luck....one is $16.50, but you can buy two for $18 and then try to sell the other one for $9...that's what I'm trying to do
