Good luck. You definitely got the wrong cradle, though. :(
Neil,
Sorry to bug you but my dealer doesn't think the snap-in adapter with the smartphone prep $100 option will play music. Please confirm that the snap-in adapter should allow the ipod music function to work through the MINI audio system.
Thanks
Tom

The correct snap-in adapter, along with the SMartphone option is supposed to play music. However, I know from my own service dept. that they have had trouble getting it to work.

Perhaps you should have them look at the configurator on the MINI USA website?

Step #4 -> Instruments -> SmartPhone Prep w/ Comfort USB:

This upgrade allows you to tuck your Smartphone into the armrest and gives you full access to your music through the radio controls thanks to a direct USB connection.
...

If it didn't play music from the armrest, it would be no different than the armrest included with the Bluetooth package.

When it first came out, it was really common for people to get the 038 snap-in instead of the 043. It seems like it takes a while for the tech-related options information to trickle down to the dealerships by trial and error.

All,
Thanks very much for your help. I finally got the straight scoop from my dealer whose service manager (very helpful!) went directly to MINIUSA to get the correct information. It turns out that there are now two NEW snap-in adapters: Part #84 21 2 158 682 for option 6NE and Part #84 21 2 158 683 for option 6NF (USB/Smartphone). No reason was given for the new parts. The dealer has ordered the second Part # for me and I'll report back after it's installed and working.

Nicknbecka,
I knew how it was supposed to work when I ordered the MINI, but realtiy often doesn't match specs (see RaceTripper's entry). Even when I ordered my vehicle the dealer's sales dept. had no idea why I wanted the smartprep option. They even ordered a car without it and it went to build before I discovered they'd ignored my request to get it right - so they ordered another vehicle for me.

Interesting. I have the iPhone 3GS, but am using the 038 (i.e. 3G) version of the adapter, which works just fine (for charging). I wonder what the difference is.

I have the 038 snapin part now which does not allow me to play music through the system. Since I have the smartphone prep kit -6NF I should have been sold the 043 snapin part which should work properly. However the real answer is that I may not know what's correct until I get a new part installed and working properly. The very nice service manager has ordered the "NEW" 683 snapin part for me which I'll test as soon as it arrives. Will report back on how it goes.

Thanks! I stopped by my dealer today hoping to get an updated list, but didn't make it before the service department left.

Hi Tom, Curious to know if you got yours to work with the new cradle? Any differences noted?

Hi all. Bit of a newbie with this, but hoping someone can confirm. I think the answer is 'yes,' but is part #84 21 2 158 683 (for use with the smartphone prep kit) compatible with both the iPhone 3G and 3GS? I think I read a post in this thread that said yes, but would love a confirmation that it's not just for the 3GS.

Bump for the 6ne 6nf question...

I would figure this to be a software adjustment, no? I wonder what it would take. Maybe some of our "dealer" members could research this and get back to this forum. Again, wish I hadn't withheld those 100 dollars when I was picking the specs.

It is not just a software update. the ULF Module that handles Bluetooth and USB is different from 6NE to 6NF. This means that the module whould have to be changed and the wiring harness to the armrest would need to be changed inolder cars that did not have the availablility of "Smartphone" when it was built. My understanding is (but i have not been able to confirm it) the wiring harness for cars after "Smartphone" started being available may have the upgraded wiring harness no mater which (6NE or 6NF) was ordered. Cars ordered without either but with an armrest do not have the harness installed.

I looked at the box my Adapter came in it is part # 84-21-2158-683 for I phone 3GS.

I told the dealer to order Part # 84-21-2151-043 for a I phone 3G. I even had my MA check with the parts department when I was in the finance office at the dealer to make sure they had the correct part for my 3G I phone. As well has an e-mail to my MA 3. weeks before the car came in. And both times they said we have the correct part. So my question is, Is this why my phone does not charge and play music?

Probably as MINI would just use the same adapter for both phone if it worked, they would not have come up with another adapter for the 3GS unles it was really needed for some reason.

There's a post a few up in this thread (#90 by Paco II) that says the 683 snap-in works for both- for what it's worth, the 043 has been reported to work for both as well although the fit isn't perfect for the 3GS if I remember correctly.

Yeah, no problem with my 3GS and gf's 3G using 683.

When you connect, are you getting the warning? Or just nothing? Have you tried rebooting your phone?

And I have rebooted my phone,

I have a 2009 Mini with prep kit and iphone adapter (part# 84 21 2 158 683) with iphone 3G, using iphone apple software version 3.1.2, without navigation.
Has anyone found instructions for how to operate this unit????
The unit works in the adapter but I have a few questions.
1. Will the iphone adapter work with iphone software version 3.1.2? The adapter I have was qualified on apple software version 3.0 but 3.0 lacked a number of features, like cut and paste, that I needed, so I had to upgrade to 3.1.1. Then 3.1.1 had phone failure problems so I needed to upgrade further to 3.1.2.
2. When I touch the phone button on the dash the phone immediately starts dialing the last number instead of showing the phone menu. Does anyone know how to get around this issue - it makes the phone almost unsuable for outgoing calls while driving.
3. How can I check to see if the phone is using the external antenna because it acts as though it's connecting through Bluetooth and not through the adapter.
4. Can the shuffle feature be selected from the dash - it's the only way I want to play my music and it doesn't show up as an option?
Thanks very much for any help anyone can provide. If someone knows who makes the adapter maybe I could contact them???????

BTW, I originally had an early version of the snap-in adapter (part# 84 21 2 151 043) which has been replaced by newer units - see below from BMW, as of August 09 -
Snap-In Adapter for Apple iPhone 3Gs™ and option 6NE 84 21 2 158 682
Snap-In Adapter for Apple iPhone 3Gs™ and option 6NF 84 21 2 158 683

Cheers and happy holidays.
