confused iphone3g not charging

So , I just purchased a pre-certified 2008 cooper with comfort usb/ipod package. i have the BMW Y cable that goes into the cubbie (USB/AUX). the iphone is not charging.. i have gone through the these threads over and over and I am still not clear. do I have a faulty cable or is there something else I am missing here? I am not concerned about the arm rest attachment, tho I see I have that. Thanks for your input, I am looking forward to a solution.

Vixster,

Your most likely problem is that the "Y-Cable" that you have is the old version that works with the 1st gen iPhone and older iPods.

What you need need is the newer part number of that cable which has support for the latest iPods and iPhones.

Check with your dealer if they are nice they will just replace it for you.

If it still does not work with the new version of the cable then there is probably a problem with your iPhone Battery

Quick question. If I want the snap in for my iphone to get charge functionality, and better reception, but I want to use a separate ipod for music (and leave it in the car, should I get 6NE and the adapter?

Will there be an extra cord in there for the ipod? I ask this because on the bmw's, the cradle covers up the usb plug so you cant do ipod or a usb drive there anymore.

I want to do this because I like having a "music bank" that stays in the car, but would be annoyed to have to plug my iphone every time just to get music. BTW, sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm still specing out/ordering my mini cabrio S!

I don't have one, but my impression is that the snap in armrest thing for the phone basically charges the phone (not better reception unless there is a separate antenna jack on the iPhone-don't think so) and you cannot do music with, only phone (via BT). The Y cable does music (cable) and phone (via BT). But it doesn't go into the armrest (I think someone routed it there themselves though).

You'll need 6NE at a minimum to do this, or it could work with 6NF, which adds the capability of playing music using a smartphone from the armrest.

In MINIs the USB plug is below the A/C controls in the center stack, while the cradle goes inside the armrest. Two different locations, so you should be okay here. There isn't a physical USB connector in the armrest, even with SmartPhone Integration (6NF)

From what others have posted, you can't play music from both the armrest and the USB connection at the same time- I haven't seen anyone post which one gets priority when they're both connected. If you're interested in having a music connection there too, that's probably something to check first.

As for the antenna connection, it's a passive RF loop in the tray of the snap-in, it seems that even phones that have an antenna connection don't physically connect. The debate rages on about how well/if it works, but it's supposed to be similar to a passive repeater.

That part # is not for a Y-Cable. It's the cradle for the 3G/S with comfort access and no smartphone prep.

Hi all,
Just a quick message to check if anyone knows if the snap-in for 3G works w/ 3GS iphone...
I presently use a 2G iPhone (for both phone and music) and would like to change, so, I'll have to change snap-in... but I'd like to be sure i can purchase the 3G snap-in...
A precision, I'm looking for the full capacity snap-in (i mean, phone + music).
Not sure this post is very clear, but unfortunatly I get to use less and less english, and I realise my expression gets a bit messy w/ this language...

If you have serial number for wha I'm looking for, please post!

Hello Doopa Klubi,

Another person just posted earlier today and confirmed that the snap-in for the 3G works with their 3GS. (Here)

The correct part number for the 3G snap-in with music support is: 84 21 2 151 043

However, for music to work with the snap-in, the car must be built with the SmartPhone integration from the factory. It's option code 6NF in the US, but I am not sure if they are the same in Europe.

Hope that helps!

Hi, thx for quick response,

Great to know things will work (I have the smartphone prep). Will call my dealer at once... It'll be the third snap-in I buy though (first one : not fitted for smartphone prep, second one, ok w/ 2G iPhone... ). If anybody wants a second hand snap in....

I think the part numbers are the same here.

Just a warning. My service manager tells me they have not been able to get the smartphone prep cradle to work properly with 3G iPhones. They charge but won't play.

For everyone who owns the iPhone 3G cradle, are you pleased with the actual cradle itself? Is it easy to remove and place the iPhone into the cradle? Or is it a pain to click in?

The cradle is great. Easy to access, and the phone snaps in and pops out easily.

The cradle for the original iPhone was a PITA. The cradle for the iPhone 3G/S is much better and I have no complaints using it.

Outside of the size of the phone it takes, is there actually any difference between the two?

Yes, the locking mechanism and quick release work much better on the 3G/S version.

Odd- maybe someone who has access to BMW/MINI part numbers could find out exactly what that part number should be compatible with. I could only find one reference to that part number with a Google search, and it's a post in a BMW forum dated before the SmartPhone integration snap-in was even released.

Just a shot in the dark based on your symptoms and that post, but I'd guess you got a snap-in that doesn't include support for smartphone integration.

As far as I know, everyone ordering part number 84 21 2 151 043 gets the 3G snap-in with smartphone integration (music) support. Maybe try asking for that part number instead, not all the dealerships parts departments are familiar with the new music-capable snap-ins. I'm pretty sure that everyone's also come with BMW stickers- that's been reported lots of times before this.

My local BMW dealer just put one aside for me and I'll test it tonight!

I've been waiting MONTHS for this thing!

Apple iPhone 3G
USB Snap In Adapter for BMW Smart Phone (PN: 84 21 2 151 043)

Go buy one!
Neil,
My dealer sold me a snap-in adapter Part# 84 21 2 151 038 that he claimed was for the iphone 3G. It fits perfectly, the phone works and charges - but no music from the ipod section (just plays through the internal iphone speaker!!!) Does your recommended snap-in adapter Part# 84 21 2 151 043 play music through the console as well? When the iphone is in place, does the system give you another option to select on the dash, in addition to Tuner, USB, Aux and CD? Do you know where I can find instructions?
Any help will be appreciated.
Tom
I have an '09 Std Coupe, sparkling silver/black stripes with fairly standard options (winter/zenon/convenience key/auto air/etc.)

84 21 2 151 043 is for the iPhone 3G snapin for cars WITH the $100 "Smartphone Prep" package. If you don't have that option, it wont work.

If you do, it doesn't come up as an additional "input"..just the usual AUX/iPod.

Neil,
Thanks. I DO have the $100 "Smartphone Prep" package - took me a lot of research to find and order it last January!
My dash display only says AUX, not AUX/iPod.
I'm assuming that your MINI plays the iPod section of the iphone 3G this way - correct?
I'll be back at the dealer this Friday to straighten this out.
Thanks very much,
Tom

On my Nav, it just displays as "AUX". On non-nav cars the "AUX" MIGHT change to "iPod".

Good luck. You definitely got the wrong cradle, though. :(

Agree. I have the 038 cradle. It's for cars without the smartphone option, and is about $50 or so cheaper.
