Anyone put a sub in the "spare tire" location in the back of Clubman S?

I tried a Mini clubman out today, I noticed it has 3 floor levels in the trunk, the flat level, level with the seats, the gap between this level and the "real" floor, then the rather large cavity, which I assume is for the spare on Clubman's without run flats.... this seems to be a large area, has anyone built/had built for them, a sub enclosure for this area? I think it would be great to use this location for a sub, then the level above would be for amps/EQ, whatever ....

Also wondering what after Market head units look like in the new Dash (I have an 05 Mini) ...

Also, has anyone put Horns (Image Dynamics) under thier dash, and maybe even used Milbert amps? How do they sound?

What are the factory size speakers in the doors (mids and midbasses), how big it practical in this location? Just 6.5", or could 7 or 8" fit?

thanks!

The flat floor would rattle if it is not taken out or replaced with something else. I know Roadster Sound is working on one for the clubman and will be fairly similar to the one they now sell for the MC/MCS. I beleive that ther will only be minor modifications to the out side of the box to make it fit in the clubman.

I just dropped a 10" JL Audio Sub in the spare tire well of the Clubman S. Plenty of room. Custom fiberglass box, amp mount, and carpet that matches the stock pretty well. I promised another guy some pics this weekend. I'll pass along to you too if you are interested. Looks amazing, but clearly prohibits the ability to go back to a spare, so I'll be running run flats from now on out. Still having problems with the amp part. Check out my other thread on the "Amp install problems with HiFi."

I have a Clubman with HIFI and just finished an install of a powered 8" sub in the tire-well. It's a Boss Audio Bass600, which I found on amazon. I got it on the recommendation of k6rtm on another forum. I ran the inputs from the x9331 connector near the hood release and powered it from the cig lighter in the boot. It sounds great and really rounds out the bottom end. Its plenty loud, but not 'gonna wake the neighbors' loud. In the mini cabin its really all you need.
Here are some pics... I have more if interested.

BTW - I'm not noticing an rattling of the sub floor and flooring. Even the tools in the wheel well are suspended in styrofoam.

That's a neat looking install. I've been thinking about these Boss units for a while - they're definitely low-profile enough to make installation pretty manageable... Couple of questions:
  • Did you have to cut out some styrofoam to make the sub fit?
  • Did you try to hardwire it in or is the lighter socket to facilitate ease of use.?
  • How did you run the audio inputs back to the amp?
Thanks,

Rex

Rex,
Thanks for the compliment.
I did not cut any styrofoam for the sub install - the sub is almost a perfect fit into the styrofoam tool tray. There are a couple of foam tabs that the sub sits on. I will try to post up a couple pics to show this in a couple of days.

I have not hardwired the sub at this point. I just plugged the sub into the cig lighter in the back for the time being. I may go back later and hardwire it in.

To get the audio signal to the sub, I ran two pairs of speaker wires from the spare well up to the driver front of the car where you'll find the x9331 connector. I tucked the wire into the side of the rear seat bottom and then tucked them behind the plastic panels along the floor so they are completely hidden. As far as the x9331 connector, it is easily accessed by pulling the panel along the driver side floor/hood release. I ran the sub off of the front right and left channels. I popped out the wires from the female side of the connector and soldered my new wires on, then put the wires back into the connector and put it back in place. You can read more about how to access and dismantle this connector here:

The Boss bass600 is a nice little sub, and inexpensive too. It does a very good job of rounding out the low frequency and allows me to take some of the bass off the stereo speakers which allows them to do what they are best at doing. Here is a thorough discussion of the bass600:

I have a few more pics in my gallery. Are there certain pics you'd like to see?

Thanks Brent,

No need for any more pics I think. Still have a couple of questions though:
  • Did the amp come w/the lighter cord/plug or did you fashion that yourself?
  • Have you had any issues w/blown fuses on that circuit from the extra draw of the amp?
  • Any more comments on the performance of the sub itself?
Rex

I'm by no means a car audio expert, but the bass600 sub sounds really good. An 8" sub is not going to equal a 10 or 12" in the degree of kick or rumble, but it does both of these just fine. I can turn up the stereo louder than it should be without any distortion in the bass (loud enough that I would be concerned about creating rattles in the car). It really allows me to decrease the bass going to the speakers which helps them sound louder and clearer. Again, the speakers I have currently are the stock speakers, and adding the bass sub unit really helps. I have JL audio speakers ordered which I plan on installing in the next 2-3 weeks, more for clarity than for bass. I can say that for $125, you cannot do better than the Boss unit - it has a built in amp, small enclosure, and high level speaker inputs (which you will need for any amp/sub that you put in this system unless you plan to put in a line level filter). There is a much better and more detailed review of the sub in the link I previously attached.

I have only had the sub in for about a week, but have not had a problem with any blown fuses. Another guy in the forums, k6rtm, has had the sub for quite awhile, similarly installed and has had no problems. He measured the amps drawn from the sub and it measured out at around 12 amps. The lighter plug is on a 20A circuit, I believe.

I bought a lighter extension cord and cut one end off and used it to connect to the terminals on the sub.

Alright Brent - you've almost completely satisfied my curiosity...

One last question:

Did you run the remote volume control to somewhere accessible or do you just have it set to one level.

Thanks for your patience - I can foresee Santa dropping one of these down my chimney fairly soon!

Rex-

I ran a remote control **** from the sub. I have the control under the driver seat within easy reach. It was supplied with the bass600, and I ran it with the speaker wires from the front.

All the wires coming from the front go below the foam insert in the tire well. I punched small holes in the foam for them to come back up through to the sub. See the newer pics below.

Good Luck,
Let me know how it turns out.

Brent
