My dealer has told me that I can't even place my Mini order until Dec. if I want the HK sound system. Is this true? I don't really want the car till spring, but I don't want to have to wait till Dec. to order.

thx.

Your order doesn't actually officially go in until about 6-8 weeks or so before your production date so in your case it really wouldn't matter.

I just talked to my dealer today. My (approximate) order date will be mid-to-late November. Based on that date, they said I WOULD be able to order the HK system (since the car would not be "built" for a while after my order... around the December '02 date we all keep hearing about).

SO... I'm planning on going with the HK!

They also verified (someone also asked about this) that the HK system WOULD work with the multifunction steering wheel controls.

And (finally), they said that the new Navigation Systems were going to be coming with a DVD (rather than CD); so all of the US would fit on a single disc.

I KNEW that waiting all of this time would pay off SOME HOW!

DOn't get TOO happy yet! HK may not even happen at all or may be late again - remember it was already delayed 3 times!

Also, NAV DVD won't be available until March now the earliest!

Sorry for the bad news, happy!

When did this occur? Did it come from MINI, or a dealer? Just curious, as the dealer (admitting the HK systems were flaky regarding dates) was pretty firm on the DVD.

It's been posted on this board. Originally the DVD was supposed to be for 2003 builds but now it's been said March 03.

Be aware that the HK system you are all waiting for may turn out to be a big disappointment.

I had one of our area's top custom installers put in an aftermarket system in my MINI. He's been putting systems into Mercedes, BMWs and Porsches for 20+ years and has lots of experience with the HK systems offered by BMW. "They are crap." was how he put it. Cheap, cheap, cheap components. Obviously designed for maximum margin rather than highest sound quality. He said that if the MINI system is of the same build quality, it would be a shame for anyone to plunk down the $500 or so if they really were looking for better sound, not just a brand name.

If you are concerned about warranty issues with aftermarket equipment, dont be. Check out this link from Mini-Madness--it applies to audio as well.

JimDenver,

While none of us can say what the HK in the Mini will sound like, I agree with you 100% on how horrible the HK system sounded in my brother-in-laws 3 series.

I used his car for a month and was shocked at how poor the sound was. The sound in my stock Volvo 850 sounded 100x better than his HK. If I recall, the HK option wasn't cheap.

I hope the folks at BMW and HK do a better job with what they are about to put in the Mini. I too want the HK, but if it sounds so-so, then the money would have been wasted. Maybe they are using this delay to improve the sound, or something. Let's cross our fingers.

I agree totally with you. My wifes 5 series had a HK system and it was replaced about a month after we got the car $
