Failure to add numbers to MINI phonebook

OK, I'm a newbie. Just got the car on Monday. My Verizon Palm Centro won't sync any phonebook entries with the car ("Please wait" followed by "No entries available"), so I'd like to create entries on the MINI. I've read here that I should be able to do so via the voice command "SAVE NAME" or "STORE NAME", but either one of these takes me to storing an AM radio station.

Perhaps related is the fact that I've seen mention of a "MINI Phonebook" in the menu, and this item does not appear in my Phone menu. My choices in the Phone menu are:

Dial - A-Z - Top 8 - Redial - Missed calls - Received calls - Active calls

Should I have a "MINI Phonebook" item in this menu? Have they changed the software in the '08 so I can't add names?

The "MINI Phonebook" is invisible the voice commands are the only accessibility to it.

If I remember correctly, the "Save Name" command was the final step. I'll try and dig up a link to a walkthrough.

I am not 100% sure on the vehicles with NAV but the MINI Phonebook is just a voice dialing phone book. Which must be set up by speaking the proper command and adding the contact that thru voice commands. It is not intended for your contacts list to be imported as you seem to mention.

The contacts list that is in your phone, if capable of full pairing to the mini bluetooth will show up under the "A-Z".

As for the Palm Centro there are limitations on what contacts is will transfer tot he MINI.

Check out this link and scroll down to the Palm section and read the notes about he Centro

Yep, same for Nav too.

Sadly, I ended up updating one of the notes based on wwalkersd's post in another thread. The only difference I see so far is that wwalkersd's phone is a Verizon phone, and the other reports I have each mention that they're Sprint phones.

There is a firmware update from Sprint, but it looks like Verizon hasn't done one- no idea if it's a Bluetooth update or not, but it's a possibility.

It's actually Schatzy62's post that I was looking for on the voice commands. I guess "Save Name" is correct.

I just reviewed Schatzy62's post (thanks for the link) and tried the commands again. Maybe it's just my voice, but I can't get it to recognize either "Save Name", "Store Name", or "Add Name". "Dial Name" works, but of course I have no entries to dial. "Dial Number" also works, and numbers are heard correctly, which leads me to believe that maybe they've changed the firmware and "Save Name" is gone. Why they don't provide a way to enter phone numbers into the book on the screen is beyond me.

P.S. "Help" doesn't produce the list of commands shown in Schatzy62's post, either. It tells me to say "Options" to get a list of options at any level, and tells me I can say the top-level menu names.

Did you ever find out how to get the voice dialing to work? I tried to program in each name and number by voice but the system is not recognizing when I say the phone number.

No, it's still not working for me.

But here's an interesting bit of data: I bought a Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth Hands-Free kit for my truck, and it has no problem whatsoever downloading the phonebook from my Centro (though it won't voice dial anything without pre-training). So from where I sit, it looks like the problem is on the Mini side.

Of course, being BMW, they'll just say "Tough. You should have bought one of the phones on the approved list."
