Volume of door interior?

Ok, I know the doors aren't a perfect sealed enclosure, but I'd like to get an idea of the volume inside the door so I have at least a starting place to calculate my 6.5" driver's expected parameters/environment.

Has anyone done a calculation or estimate of the interior volume of the Mini's doors ( correcting for window displacement, etc., would be nice ).

Thanx,

Bill in P.G.

I understand what you are trying to do but with two drivers one 3-1/2" and also a 5-1/2 or 6-1/2 and all the openings and areas for air to escape this will be a non issue.

Also most drivers of these sizes for cars are designed to have a wide range of volume allowance as they are put in so many different size doors.

Another point is that these cars are not quiet. There is a lot of noise that will affect the performance that you are trying to get.

If this was a very quiet car such as a 7 series or another very expensive luxury car then it might be worth calculating the volume.

As for the volume there very well may not be anyone else around that has thought of calculating it as there are so many holes for air to escape.

Thanx Schatzy,

Actually, It was my plan to try to seal as much of the sources of leakage as I could. I'm quickly re-thinking that, and your points are well taken. I'm going to have to look into my driver's capability at handling a free-air environment ( Vifa P17WH-06-08 ).

I can not find details on that exact driver but all of the other Vifa P17WH series speakers are not very efficient.

From what i have seen on the specs of the other Vifa P17WH series speakers these should actually be Okay in a semi free air environment.

Specs on all the others are 87db at 2.83v(1watt) which is very low compared to many of th Infinity, Polk, Focal, and others that are running 91 to 93 db at 1 watt. Thus lots more sound volume.

As for sealing the door up. that is not totally possible and also can cause other problems especially if water gets in the door as is always the case. Just remember they always put weep holes in the bottom of the door for a reason.

I have used Vifa drivers in speakers is have custom built and they do sond great in a home stereo function and I am not trying to talk you out of using the Vifa drivers but for your car you could do much better with something that was more efficient.
