Stereo help for an upgrade

Just bought stock stereo'ed MCS 2002, non HK.

Have a 12" Sub sealed box and amp (1000 Watt) but its a pyrimid so like 200 watts.

Want to upgrade the speakers and not deal with a new HU so i have to get another addapter for the wheel controls.

So how do you think I should go about this, i dont want to spend a lot, just some nice speakers and maybe get that sub wired up. Although i dont know how to run those new speakers to the amp, or the amp to the stock HU.

So if anyone has a good thread other than the stickies or website (pics would be great) i would feel alot better doing it and getting to spending some cash if i knew what i needed and what to expect. Thanks guys.

from what i have experienced, it is far easier to get another headunit. the non-HK and the HK are not worth the steps to upgrade the speakers.

the headunit itself is a weak point, so look at replacing that. I've heard that maintaining steering wheel controls isn't a huge problem though.

A simple upgrade of speakers will give a noticeable improvement in sound quality. If you want to install the amp, it will depend on the type of inputs that it accepts. If only line level vs. speaker input, you can simply buy a line convertor. I had an amp connected to my stock HU and felt that it was much improved over stock. I don't think that the stock HU is the weak link in the system. Yes, you can get more features but you will not get any better sound quality over "many" aftermarket head units. Take a look at the NE-774V at davidnavone.com

Yeah I know the HU will help, i have done that in other cars and just the wattage up helped, what i am thinking is a cheap way to make the sound better, im sure the best is to go new hu and speakers but i dont want to deal with doing all that plus getting the connection for the wheel as well. thanks for the ideas, just need to figure out the best bang for the buck.

is your amp multi channel or just for the sub?

I have a 3 channel I installed in one of my MINI's. Ran the stock headunit, 3 channel Kicker amp, JL Audio 6W0 subs and Alpine Type R components for the front.

I did the whole install myself. The amp came with rca inputs and speaker level inputs. It sounds great now and the fiance loves it way better than stock ever did!
