Navigation & Audio Nuvi 680 Integration
Nuvi 680 Integration
Greetings All!
First I want to to say thank you to all that post on this site. You all provided me a wealth of information that helped me to purchase my first MINI. It's a 2005 Pepper White Cooper with the Premium and Cold Weather packages. It only has 40k miles on it and looks to have been garage kept. It's in excellent condition and so FUN to drive!
I recently purchased a NUVI 680 and would like to integrate it into the the MINI's sound system. I have the Boost CD player with the factory iPod adapter in the glove box.
Is there a harness or something that would allow all the audio from the GPS to come through the factory stereo? (other than the FM transmitter) I would like to have the stereo mute whenever the NUVI is alering me to something.
Is this possible?
Thanks in advance!
Mac

Check the vendor listings for New Mini Stuff. They sell a unit that connects to the Nuvi and has a wiring harness that is plug and play for the stereo to accomplish this. I have one and it works perfectly. Mutes the stereo when the Nuvi outputs any audio and resumes the stereo when done.
The harness is a little large so it is a tight squeeze behind there but it will fit. If the 680 has the traffic receiver in the cigarette lighter then I recommend also getting the custom harness they make with cigarette power attachments in them so you can hide the power plug for the Nuvi.
After that it is just figuring where you want to mount it. I have mine on top of the dash using a kuda mount but I am taking out the OEM cup holder and using a different mount to move it there. For some reason it annoys me sitting on top of the dash. It will also be less theft worthy once moved.

Thanks for the quick reply. A couple questions:
1) New Mini Stuff has a harness, the "Navigation interface (for portable nav systems)" for 60 pounds, Is this the one you are referring to? I assume this just jacks into the Headphone jack on the Garmin?
2)Do you have any more detail about the harness that has the power port, or is that the same harness mentioned above, just customized with the power port added? Just something I need to ask for?
3) Do you use a Bluetooth phone with your Garmin so that the sound comes through the stereo speakers? I so, how does that setup work for you?? I will be using my iPhone connected to the factory iPod connector in the glove box.
4) Is anyone else using this setup?
5) How do I become a member of the Pepper White Owners Club?
Thank you!

That is the correct harness for the setup. It will also have a box wired into the harness and a cable coming out of it with a jack to plug into the audio jack on the Nuvi. Make sure to turn the volume up on that box. Otherwise it is too quiet and you cannot hear the GPS. Turn it up and you can hear it fine.
The original version didn't have the volume adjustment and I know of a PS talking.
The harness with the power is a separate harness. The two can be plugged together to work. Since Mikey makes the harnesses you may be able to get him to make up a single one with both parts in it. Would be easier to find a home for in the dash.
I use a BT phone (an iPhone in fact). It sounds OK but it is a little too loud so it distorts the mic when talking. It is also weird in pauses since the music will come on until someone talks. It is not intelligent enough to mute the entire call. I have moved my Nuvi down in my car from the top of the dash to the side of the radio. Hopefully that will make it quieter. You can also play with the volume for the call on the Nuvi but I have not done that yet.
No idea if anyone else uses this setup. When done it is very clean. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
For the Owners club go to the general forum (right next to the tire and wheel forum) and you will find the thread to join. Just pick a number and post what you want. Annette will post back it is yours or taken.

Thanks for your help on this! Glad to hear someone else is using an iPhone.
Do you have any pictures of your setup you could post?
Thanks again,
Mac

Hmm, interesting, I didn't know anyone made this.
I have a Nuvi 680 as well. I also have the NewMiniStuff Parrot bluetooth set-up, which is very nice and works fabulously. On top of that, I have the factory iPod adapter, which in practice with my old iPod really sucked, but with my iPhone used as iPod really works quite well.
I'm already full-up behind the HU though...I'd probably have to put the box for the Nuvi harness behind the parcel shelf and run it in from there. I wonder if I will be over-harnessing (for lack of a better word)...I don't know if I have space to even plug a Nuvi harness in anywhere.

Does the 680 not have an audio out??? For my 360, I just use the audio out into the Aux In port on the OEM headunit. Just wondering what the big deal is with the 680.
It does...but I don't have an aux port.
My concern right now is that I would have umpteen things going on back there...OEM iPod adapter, Parrot BT, and then adding in the power adapter and the nav adapter. Maybe I'm just overly worried because I don't know any better. I can follow instructions to install the stuff (I did my own BT and rerouted my iPod adapter) but I don't really get what's what...I'm just following instructions.

Aw ok. Yeah well to alleviate any concerns..I've got the OEM iPod adaptor too--but no iPod, lol, Aux In port. I use Bluetooth on my AT&T Tilt PocketPC phone and integrated with the Nuvi 360. I use 360 for all audio playback...so I don't have to change the Aux port at all--listening to music, listening to nav instructions, or talking on the phone.
I've also got the trailer hitch lighting module, a permanent rear CCD facing camera, and audio mic in engine bay, Valentine 1 radar detector, Hella Tire Pressure Monitor System all driven by the power system, lol. I'm not worried, I got a fire extinguisher under the passenger seat, lol.

Yeah I was actually thinking of your Nav set-up when I was looking at this...I like how your lady interrupts the music for instructions
99% of the time mine's drowned out by the stereo and I'm like "Wait, what??" as I scramble to turn down the music
It would be 4 different things coming directly out of the HU/harnesses...I just don't know.

Since I've hijacked this thread enough, I'm going to post pix of a new mount I'm working on in a Nuvi 360 thread--you can see it first hand on Saturday. Doesn't require tools to install or remove. Nav position is easily adjustable for best viewing, looks good too.
re: lady
She can get a bit annoying when she keeps reminding me to do things--lol. But I can easily turn her off, lol..ok sounds kinda funny there.
Will post it here
