Thanks for the information kenchan, but the only speakers Infinity makes for 6x9 are 2-way. I'd like to keep my system all the same.

I guess I could clip the wire for the tweeter, it seems like a waste. Would another 6.5" speaker fit in the back? I'm sure I could get a hold of just the speakers, and not the whole kit.

Hey kenchan, you said you had polk 5250's. The bottom mount depth is 2 1/2", right? I assume that there is enough room for the window to go down all the way. I think the Kappas I want have a bottom mount depth of 2 7/16", and therefore an additional 1/16" of space, unless i've mixed up the measurements for top and bottom.
I want to make sure that the 6.5" will fit. There are adapter rings for this stuff, right? Infinity does not make component speakers in 5.25". Best Buy said there are some plastic rings they can sell me for $16...Know of any better options?

Run that by me again, you cut out the speaker, but left its mounted rim in place? Damn, that is a bit extreme for me. I'll check local stereo shops for some kind of mounting solution. Best Buy said they will take the speakers back if they don't fit, as long as I don't damage them.
^^ actually it's not a rare trick im doing. i just tore the cone out by
the edge, broke off the basket in the back to remove the motor, kept
the terminals so i can re-use the stock wiring (plug and play) and drilled
a few holes on the stock frame to mount the polks.

A spacer will have the speaker stick out farther then, I think, right? Can the stock speaker covers be removed without much damage? I might have to have the new Infinities exposed. Theft is not a concern in this area. Did your tweeters fit in the stock spot ok?
I'm glad you are always trawling the forum, kenchan.

if i remember correctly, the grill in the door has a lip on the inside and
you just trim it down. put some soft foam material around the lip so
that it does not vibrate over your new speakers.
the tweeters took an almost effortless amount of fabrication to fit into
the stock tweeter grill area.

Hey kenchan, which wires should I route into the crossover? The tweeter and woofer seem to have thier own wires going out of the door as far as I can tell.

Thanks kenchan, you've been so helpful.
My install should be done tomorrow or on thrusday. I need to get 1" spacers instead of .5" spacers. The driver on these speakers is huge. Good thing is that the opening in the door is big enough. I'll have to dill holes for the mounting though.
The tweeters will fit ok with one of the many mounting things they sent with it.
Do you think I should leave the stock speaker covers on? I'd have to dremel them out. Then I have no idea how the Infinity covers even attach. They do not snap on and have no mounting holes.
ありがとう!

i would first remove as much of that lip on the inner side of the door
panel that goes over the speaker and see how much clearance you have
left.
your best bet is to try to use the grill on the door panel as much as
possible...unless you want that aftermarket appearance..which is also
cool. you may/may not be able to cleanly attach the new grill. it's a
case by case thing so wont know exactly until you're actually doing the
install.

I've been reading this thread with great interest as I am looking to upgrade my stock stereo as well. I had been thinking that I would need to install an amp and speakers at some point in the future. But if I can get away with just the speaker upgrade for now that would be great. Nabeshin, please post your thoughts about the sound improvement you've realized from this install once you have been able to evaluate it.
My two cents on your install is that if you can leave your doors stock looking all the better. It doesn't change the sound and keeps things nice and stealthy.

I spent 5 hours last night, and 8 hours today installing the Infinity Kappa 60.9cs 6.5" speakers. It was my first ever install. It took a lot of time to figure out how to get the speakers to mount. I didn't any pictures of the driver's side. I attempted that first, so it was a thinking game. After I knew what to do, I did the passenger side, with many pictures. Note: The resolution and clarity you see is the best my camera could do...
Pulled the door panel off and removed old speakers:

Engineer speaker mounts/adapters out of MDF:

Manufacture said speaker adapters/mounts:

this is how it is done if you don't have a router, and your dremel is too weak.

Install the adapter/mount:

It does not need to be really neat, the speaker baffel fits into it just fine.

I didn't get any shots of the crossover install, but they are stuck to the inside of the door with super sticky 2 sided tape. The window clears the crossover and the wiring.
here are the speakers in:

When I tried test fitting the panel, on this side and the driver's, it became apparent that I could not keep the stock covers.
I had to dremel them out and use a coping saw to cut larger circles.

Here is the new larger hole, and another shot of my soon to be famous coping saw.

The new tweeters were also considerably larger, but they fit in the stock bracket. However, they stuck out and the grill had to be trimmed away.
You are looking at over 2.5 hours of hand work with an exacto knife:

And the final product, sorry for the bad lighting, I'll get better shots out in the sun later.

I mounted the new grills with 2 sided tape for now, untill I find a better way, or get some black 2 sided tape and spend the time to mount tape around the entire ring.

The sound is amazing. Very clear. I had to tweak all the stereo settings. With the crossovers, the bass up front is almost gone. I might have to get that Infinity BassLink to compensate. The stock deck had no trouble playing these speakers.
Anyway, after getting it all tuned right with a few songs by Andy Hunter, I played one of my favorite songs: Nothing But You, by Paul Van Dyk. That song never fails to get the hair to stand up on the back of my neck no matter how many times I hear it, but this time I was almost brought to tears. Never before had I heard it like this; new details and nuances, and a clarity and range I've never experienced before. It was beautiful.
These speakers are well worth the time, effort, and money to install.

i just hooked up the speaker level from the rear sp's and pulled the
remote on/off wire from one of the switched fuses under the steering
column.
got the power directly below from the battery.
while you're routing the remote on/off wire down the door sill, i
recommend you also route the remote volume module wire up to the front.

Wow, really nice job and write up. Glad they sound so good with your stock HU. A few questions if you don't mind:
Why did the new speakers loose the base? Is that a function of the speakers, or did you set them that way on purpose? I'm in a cabrio so even a small subwoofer will cost a lot of space I don't have.
It looks like you fabricated about a 1" thick MDF to mount the woofers. Was this thickness necessary for the magnets to clear the window or was it thicker than necessary but on hand?
I assume the thickness was the reason that the stock covers didn't go back on.
Lastly, what are you going to do about your tweeter covers?

The bass went because the crossover blocks all low frequency sounds and then redistributes what is left to the tweeter and woofer; based on frequency, I guess.
I needed 1" spacers for the magnets to clear the window. These where huge magnets, almost the size of the cone, about a half inch shy of the full diameter, then about 2.5" deep.
That thickness was the reason the stock covers had to go.
The tweeters had a built on cover. They are like the screen to an automatic shaver.
