iPod Dock + USB/Aux Y cable?

Anyone tried plugging the USB+Aux Y cable into an iPod Dock? I couldn't get it to work. The iPod charges but the radio does not recognize anything is plugged in. I have an older iPod so wondering if someone has gotten this to work with a new device.

thanks

I understand it only works with 3rd generation ipods or later.

should have clarified

Sorry for the confusion... my iPod does work just fine with the Y cable but I would like to plug the Y cable into this:

When I plug the Y cable into that dock then the iPod makes a noise like <blip> as if it was inserted into the dock and starts to charge. The display does not change and the HiFi never recognizes an iPod.

I'm not sure if this dock is just old and newer docks work or if no dock will work at all. It would be much easier to just put this at the bottom of the center stack rather then fussing with the cable every time.

That would be convenient, but I don't think there is any iPod output from the 30 pin dock connector, just charging input. The iPod audio output is routed through the line out.

The dock has a line out. Try connecting that to the aux input (with a stereo cable) instead of using the Y cable's aux input plug. That would take care of the audio output. The remaining question is whether the USB can operate the iPod's controls.

USB won't operate the controls as the iPod isn't recognized when in the dock. Yes, using the AUX out on that dock to the AUX in would work but without the stereo recognizing the iPod I'd have to use the click wheel to choose songs.

Oh well.. it was worth a try.
