Upgrading 2007 Cooper stereo

I pose the following challenge to all the Mini maniacs on this forum I recently convinced my girlfriend to get a new 2007 Mini Cooper. She opted not to get the HK upgrade for costs reasons. However, she is very unhappy with the quality of the stock sound system. So for Xmass I was looking into picking up some speakers and an amp for her and installing them! I should add that I have done several serious stereo installs over the years and shouldn't have a problem from that aspect. The reason for this post is that I don't own a Mini myself nor can I really inspect her car closely without rising concern from her So I need your help! I need to know exactly what size speakers are in her Mini and what viable replacement options are out there for it. I read over many posts on this forum and it seems that I can put 6.5" drivers in the doors if I put a ring on them. Do I need to scrap the stock grills to do this? Also, where is a good place to put a nice four channel amp? Keep in mind she has a 2007 without the HK upgrade.

Cheers!

Mr. Motor... Is her 2007 MINI a convertible, or a hardtop/hatchback?

This is an important distinction as the two models are still in different "generations", which means the stereo & wiring are also completely different between the two.

This forum is for the 1st Generation MINIs, which for 2007 models would only apply to convertibles. The 2007 hardtop model is a new generation (i.e. 2nd Generation).

Please let us know which one it is!

If it is a hardtop, see this thread:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=95211
It has a detailed description of speaker replacement for the R56.

i think this is the way to go even if you don't do the subwoofer.

OK, thanks for the clarification, Mr. Motor.

In light of this development, I'm going to move the thread to the 2nd Generation Navigation & Audio forum, as that is where you'll get the best results for your girlfriends MINI.

Incidentally, you should know that 2nd Generation hardtops are also known by their internal code, R56.

Good luck getting the information you need.

Well I have picked up all of the equipment and am now looking to get everything I need to install it! My next question is does anyone have the wiring diagram for the 2007 Cooper none HK? I just need the four speaker outputs from the headunit.

That site was great in showing me how to remove the old speakers But it doesn't say anything about the wiring of the headunit. I guess I could pull out the speakers and see what color wires are hooked up to them, but I would rather not take the chance.

The reason I am asking is that I will be installing an AMP and hooking up a line leveler to the head unit and running shielded RCAs back to the amp. So I need to know which lines to hook up to the line leveler.

Cheers,
Graham

Sure it does. Look at post #81 in that thread.
That thread has everything.
Including german translations you might need for some of the schematics.

Mr. Motor,

In light of the fact that there is no such thing as a factory H/K stereo in the 2nd Generation MINIs (the options are "standard" or "Hi-Fi" now), I am editing the thread title to remove the reference to H/K, to reduce any confusion.
