SIRIUS Sportster 5

I just purchased a Sportster 5 and was wondering if anyone has installed one yet. I read some other posts on here about installing the receiver. I am kinda confused as what to do about the antenna. Can I use that one that I read is under the seat?

Any help would be awesome

Here's a Sportster 5 mounted in my wife's '07 MCS. Until I get the ProClip mount I'm using the included suction cup windshield mount. I double-side taped the suction cup to the bottom of the right cupholder. It's worked fine for a couple of weeks now.

DyeLooper has a great & proven solution for using the OEM Sirius antenna. I'm working on that now.

Oh, and one heads up: do NOT start the car or power it up when you have the seat removed and associated wiring disconnected. It WILL throw an airbag & seatbelt code that must be reset by your dealer. My dealer said the warranty will not cover the reset.

2 SMB cables via ebay connected to antenna pre-wire under passenger seat. I get great reception, some others say they have problems though.

Sportster 5 Install

Finished my Sportster 5 install, very easy. I first tried the Kuda mount, but had problems with it not allowing me to adjust my Heat/Ac control. Others have had the same problem but some also got it to work eventually. I was not gonna mess with it and bought the Proclip. Snapped in real nice. I ordered a mount from Bracketron that swivels and tilts. My unit is hard wired into fuse 21 and the antenna is connected under the passenger seat via 2 SMB cables from Ebay. I also purchassed a 90 degree SMB connector so the cable would not stick out towards the passenger too far. I ran the wires up inside the left kick panel and squeezed them by the proclip. You can barely see them. The antenna wire is a different story. I did the best I could with it. I use a 90 degree Aux cable also. All in all, very happy. Solid, good looking install if I say so myself. I would never allow someone else to try something like this to my ride, (Too many hackers out there).

Is there any way to tap into the satellite underneath the seat without removing the seat?

Just remove the four torx screws and prop up the seat, you dont have to fully remove it (dont disconnect the wire harness). Then take off the cover under the seat. If there is not plastic cover under the passenger seat, you may have to make a slit in the carpeting with a knife to find the antenna wire.

I ordered the cables as per DyeLoopers instructions. I did a test run of the factory installed antenna vs. the Sportster's antenna. The results were identical, no difference.

I'm nearly finished with my install of the Sportster 5 with ProClip mount. My wife really digs it. It's her car.

I tried unscrewing the torx screws for the seat and couldn't get them to budge. Anyone else have difficulties with them?

Under the seat, is the antenna wire under the plastic cover? There is a slit in the carpet where the seat electrical wire bundle comes out. However I couldn't feel an antenna wire in there.

Thanks

Use a socket set, if you tried a screwdriver type, you wont get it.

Thanks. I use a torx bit that i put in my electric drill. It's one of those rechargeable ones so it probably didn't have enough juice. I'll try a socket.

Approximately what length of SMB cable did you use? Is SMB what you have to use on the Sportster5 or can you use BNC as well? (wondering if monoprice.com might have something useful and cheap) Also, can anyone give some pics or indepth description on the antenna prewire.

ETA - This cable should work, yeah?

The cable you linked to is the one I just finished purchasing. It's excellent, 5 ft is plenty if you run it under the center console (almost too much, I wrapped it on itself). It's not enough if you want to pass it under the front of the passenger and down the right side of the carpet.

Awesome, thanks, as long as I can route it under the center then I'm good. Appreciate the reply! Now just gotta make sure I do the add-a-circuit stuff correctly and decide where I want to actually mount it and whether to do proclip or something similar or some velcro type thing or what.

I'm in the process of hardwiring it. Hopefully I can find a female cigarette lighter plug adapter. Didn't see any last time I went to Radio Shack. :[

Just now getting around to doing this /sheepish. Can someone show/tell how they attached tot he antenna prewire under than passenger seat? I'll probably have already popped up the seat for a better look shortly, but any description would be helpful. Is it already ended in such a way that I can just attach the SMB cable I bought directly or is splicing involved? Been searching to try to find the correct order/directions for removing the downtubes/kickpanel, etc. I did some exploratory and got some stuff apart but I worry about breaking something off going in like that.

No splicing needed, just push the ends together.

Thanks, DyeLooper, was just curious if there was a SMB (or other connector) head on the antenna lead as is, so its good to hear that I can just hook right up. Awesome, thank you! I may pop the seat up this afternoon in that case.
