Finished my install this weekend

I am happy to report that the Focal K2P's fit in the stock position behind the stock speaker grill. I put the tweeters in the upper speaker position. The jury's is still out on this position however. I'm seriously considering moving them up to the "A" pillar area.

I managed to squeeze the JL Amps under each seat. The sub is in the tool holder area. I constructed a fiberglass enclosure and houses a JL Audio 10W3v2. I will be building a cover to completly hide the sub/enclosure, making this a total stealth install. I'm sorry that I don't have any pictures up just yet, but my daughter is using my camera for her photography class at school and I can't seem to get a hold of it when I need it.

We ended up taking both of the doors apart, all the way to the outer skin, to get dynamat on the outer skin. I will say that it was well worth the effort, but a major pain to get the windows out and then back in again.

This system kicks bigtime! These K2P's are the clearest sounding speakers that I've heard in a long time. I purchased them through a vendor on ebay for around $509 shipped. I know there are supposed to be counterfeit Focals out there, but these came complete with serial numbers and all of the necessary forms for warranty. If anyone wants the email of the vendor, PM me.

I will try to take some pictures and post them on the gallery if I can figure out how to.

Congrats Charlie!

How long did it take you to do the dynamat in the front doors?
I've heard it's a major pain to get the door apart.

Now we just gotta wait for the pics =)

I was waiting for photos. In this day and age they are a requirement, you know.

I'm interested in how you did the doors. I had heard it was impossible.

I hope not to install amps, so that info wont help me much.

the door panel is actually two pieces....an outer ring and an inner section. the inner section is part of the window insert. I pulled one apart and realized what a PITA it would be to remove the window cassette and bailed...the owner didn't really want me to mat the doors at all anyways due to weight concerns so no point creating extra work.

IIRC, it's about 12 large Torx bolts and the whole insert comes out. A lot of work to be sure.

Hey Charlie,

do us a step by step write-up for dynamatting the doors! hopefully you took pics along the way so you won't have to do it again for them

The entire window assembly was removed. It's a matter of unbolting piece after piece until it is all removed, a major PITA, but worth while. I didn't take any pictures as my camera was not available at the time. If you have no experience in dismantling a door, my suggestion would be to have someone more knowledgeable do it for you. It is a royal PITA!!!!!!

However, we managed to get the whole outer skin covered, reassembled the window cassette and place the K2P's, then replace the trim pieces. The biggest caveat is that the airbag codes are tripped and I need to go back to the dealer to have them reset as we removed the seats and anything that looked to be in the way.

I truly don't want to be responsible for any problems that you might have in this type of install. It is not for the weak at heart. If you don't have any experience in this type of dismantling and reassembling, I highly recommend visiting the quality install shop in your immediate area to work with you. I've done a bunch of installs, and I didn't feel qualified to venture into this project alone. (I wanted someone I could sue! )

If you are somewhat adept at dismantling and re-installing, this should be fairly easy if you are patient. If not, I highly suggest that you budget for those more qualified to assist you along the way.

My main purpose was to let you know that you can install better quality than what I've been reading here. This system makes a lot of noise. I currently have the sub set to -2, so that should tell you something. I also am not a rapper and listen to classic rock mainly, so I don't need the thump. ( I can get all that I want however.)

With this said, the K2P's are the clearest, loudest, and best sounding components that I've ever heard. MHO! and well worth the extra over the Polyglass Focals. No need to sacrifice quality due to lack of install space. There is plenty of room for bigger magnets and room under the seats for some power amps.

Charlie,
Did you upgrade from the HiFi setup? It looks like you did not. I wonder if that has anything to do with the larger speakers fitting considering Motormouth had to Dremel to get his to fit.....

kook,

I know nothing of the HiFi setup. I don't feel qualified to answer this, but they went right in without any adjustments.

Yunno, I really can't believe that BMW/Mini would resort to such poor, poor quality when it comes to their speakers/setups. For the life of me, I can't see how they justify these speakers on a $30000 vehicle. I've had transistor pocket radios from the 60's with better quality speakers.

I don't know what's in the HiFi/H/K setup, but I truly wish I could, for once, purchase a vehicle that didn't have any stereo setup installed upon delivery. We pay all this cash for crap only to have to re-do it.

sum total of speakers is about $50 actual cost. it's better to include them and make 99.9% happy then not include them to appease the minority. Subaru learned it's lesson on the '04 STi...no radio nor speakers
