I've searched, but didn't find, a post stating the sizes of the OEM speakers for the HIFI Upgrade in the R56. Can someone tell me the size for each location? Thanks!

Here's something from another NAMer.

Take care,

Adam

I believe the speaker sizes are the same for the standard and HIFI. The HIFI just adds tweeters. I can verify that the rear are 6x9s in the HIFI. I just removed them. There is a separate tweeter mounted in front of each 6x9.

I'll be replacing the rears with Infinity Kappa 693.7i 6x9s.

Thanks, but I'd like to know for sure. Yeah, I can see the rears are coaxial.

You could PM dneal. He seems to have done a fair amount of delving into the HIFI system.

I can't imagine BMW making different size cutouts in the door panels for the HIFI speakers. That just doesn't jibe with their cost-cutting concerns on the R56.

You may have been the influencing force that got me to look at the Kappas. Although a Kappa in Japanese folklore is a mischievous water sprite known to eat children, but prefers cucumbers.

The choice was down to Focals or Kappas. The Kappas come with two external crossovers, and thus have two sets of connectors -- one for the tweeter, and one for the woofer and mid-range speakers. The 6x9 wiring in the HIFI has a pair of wires for the 6x9 and a pair for the tweeter. Presumably, there is a crossover in the amp. So, I figure I can just connect directly to the Kappas dual inputs without using their external crossovers.

I was considering doing this. Please post when you make the switch and what issues you run into. Although the HIFI sounds pretty good as it is.

The speaker swap is just part of a rear area conversion project. I'm removing the rear seats, building a wall up to the window line to form a barrier between the cargo area and passenger area (front seats). The wall will hold an MDF speaker box for the two 6x9s. The rear will get a visual cover to conceal the cargo area. So, the original position of the 6x9s would be muffled.

I won't be able to tell you about fit issues, if there are any, but I will report any electrical issues.

Or am I just being dumb and missed what you meant?

WOW!!!

Anyone want to come to Long Island and remove my rear seats, dynamat the back end, and install a small speaker wall (just put in the 2 6x9's or replace with round 6"'s) and add a nice 10" subwoofer and amp? I'll pay for all parts and buy the beer and pizza!!

Common, you know you want to!!!!!

Anyone who plans to drive that car already has brain damage...

Maybe they're planning to have kids and wanted to see what it would be like.

Seriously, though, I've seen an installation where a nominal sized sub (maybe 10") was installed in the well inside the boot. Looks like it would be worth doing. Anybody done something like that with the HIFI upgrade. Can someone point me to where it would get hooked up (where to connect a crossover, etc.). I know there's an amp back there for the upgrade, so it seems like it should be easy, but I'm an electrical idiot. Robin, are U there?

I'll do it for the pizza, but I charge $100,000 to come to the East Coast.

I know very little about audio electronics. I'm just swapping speakers. The majority of what I'm doing is sound insulation. There have been posts about people adding amps and subwoofers. So, you should be able to find others who can advise you. My only comment would be that if you remove the rear seats and put in a floor, there would be a hollow area below it that would be good for one or two subwoofers.

Great dynamat job, that stuff is a real mess to work with but well worth it.

I hope you used a heat gun... my experience with that stuff has been not so great if you don't use a heat gun and prep the surface properly. Then again I live in south florida where the temperatures are RIDICULOUS, the stuff tends to peel off easier. The heat gunned on parts of my car are not coming off. We also have used map gas torches to put it on customers cars, works real nice and quick.
