H/K Speakers and Questions
Hey Guys,
I have a 2005 MCS with the H/K system and I think it sounds perfect for what I'm looking for. I actaully like it so much that I wouldn't mind that same type of sound in my other car - '97 Mitsu Eclipse Spyder. It started me thinking about getting some used H/K speakers and putting them in my Eclipse
1) What size are the stock MCS H/K Speakers - 6X9 in the rears, 5 1/4 in the doors and 1"-2" tweaters??
2) Do you need the OEM amp to make these speakers sound the way they do or could I hook them up to any aftermarket amp and head unit and expect the same results?
3) anyone got a complete set for sale?
Thanks for your help guys!!

Most of the "magic" in the H/K system isn't in the speakers themselves. The H/K amplifier handles the digital signal processing, as well as serving as the crossover for the door speakers. If you were to get the H/K door speakers and try to use them in a different car, you'd also have to get a crossover to send the high and low frequencies to the appropriate speaker.
Also, the H/K speakers are not the same impedance as most aftermarket speakers. Most car speakers are 4-ohm speakers, while the H/Ks are 2-ohm. This means that you need to use them with an amp that's capable of driving a 2-ohm stereo load for extended periods of time. It will also make it difficult to find the external crossovers you'll need for the door speakers, since the crossover frequency is dependent on speaker impedence, and most crossovers are set up for 4-ohm speakers.
In short, I don't think that the H/K speakers would sound anywhere near the same in another car as they do in the MINI.

As above (great post as always) and just to add that you need to remember that the H/K in the MINI is actually tuned for the MINI. Moving the system to another cabin (if even possible) with different size and shape may produce different results.
