MITM Shutterbug Run -- Thursday August 2 at 10 AM
Do you enjoy photography? Ever wish that you could stay a little longer at a scenic spot during a run to take a few more photos? Then the Shutterbug Run is for you!
In the Shutterbug Run, the focus will be on photography. Of course there will be twisties, but once we reach our destinations, there will be plenty of time for walking about and taking photos of Colorado's natural beauty. Here's the plan:
We'll take Berthoud Pass down to I-70, then head east to Exit 238: Fall River Road. Go up Fall River Road about 9.2 miles to a parking lot. From there we'll hike about 3/4 mile to the St. Mary's Glacier area. This is a beautiful spot, with a lake, a perennial snowfield, bristlecone pine, and flowers. Wander around at your leisure. Set up your tripod. Take a few extra shots of the flowers. We'll have time!
Next photo stop is Genesee Park, off I-70's Exits 253 and 254. You may have noticed the bison along I-70 -- this is where they live! Genesee Park is Denver's oldest mountain park, and acquired its first bison and elk from Yellowstone in 1914. Weather permitting, we can pick up lunch on our way to Genesee Park and have a picnic there.
After exploring Genesee Park, if there is time and interest, we can head to Red Rocks near Morrison, or return to Winter Park via Squaw Pass Road ("the western Dragon") and actually stop at the scenic overlooks. I know I've always been too immersed in motoring that road to pull over and enjoy the scenery. Anyone else?
A few notes: (1) Parking at the two lots at St. Mary's Glacier is $5 cash. It is best to have exact change, as the lot owners are not always there to collect upon arrival. There is no free parking anywhere along Fall River Road. (2) The only legal parking along Fall River Road is at the two lots. The residents of St. Mary's are very protective of their area, so we need to be respectful of their parking regulations and their speed limits. (3) The hike to the St. Mary's Glacier area is short, but it can be steep and rocky. Wear appropriate footwear, and pack some water. (4) This ride is limited to the first 10 cars that get in line on Thursday morning for the 10 AM departure. See page 12 of your MITM Owner Manual for the Ride Start point for group rides.
