Yay! Another Dragonslayer to join us in our fall fun!

It will probably get cold at night, so wearing layers is a good idea. Be sure to bring your FRS radio, so we can communicate between MINIs. And if you enjoy imbibing, the Dragon is in a dry county, so stock up on your beverages!

See you soon!

Welcome to NAM, rossmini! I'll post a few links for you, but why don't you read through the thread, too, to familiarize yourself with our fun MINI antics on the Dragon! Basically, we are meeting on the Dragon at high noon on Thursday, Oct. 21, and staying at Fontana Village until Sunday, Oct. 24.

http://www.fontanavillage.com/ This is where most of us are staying. It's located on Hwy. 28, about 12 miles from The Crossroads of Time, where the Dragon begins at Deal's Gap.

http://www.tailofthedragon.com/maps/postermap2003.gif Here's a fun map showing details of the Dragon.

A bunch of us plan to meet 12-12:30 THIS Thursday (YAY!) at the Tail of the Dragon Overlook, which you can see in the maplink above. I recommend booking lodging at Fontana Village, to be near all of us. Tapoco Lodge is closer to Deal's Gap, but Fontana has a gas station! And they really LOVE the MINI community!

http://www.tailofthedragon.com/maps/dragonloop.gif Here's another one.

PM me if you have any specific questions! I can give you more specific info via PM.

For those of you who are not in to Schroth bonda...erm, ahhh, harnesses, are you aware you can lock your OEM belts? It makes a difference during spirited driving. If you are held tighter to your seat your arms and legs are more free to do the job of driving instead of trying to keep yourself seated.

NOT to worry...I ALWAYS buckle up. I've spent way too many summers driving in Spain to do otherwise, and have pulled way too many of those who didn't, to EVER wanna run a curvy, twisty road without being well-strapped in.

Next Spring, I'll have a harness, but the OEM will have to do this Fall.

No, not just buckled in. You can lock the belt in place before you take off so it does not allow you to move forward at the shoulders. There are a couple of steps to doing it but it makes a difference.

The trick comes from Mr. Wicks. I have not attended one of his schools yet but one of our club members who did passed it on to me.

Sorry for the thread hijack but some of youse guys might want to use this this weekend. This may be posted some where on the site but I did not know about it until just recently.

Begin with your seat back several notches from your usual position.

Pull the seat belt across you close to the body and get it almost to the point of clicking in. With your left hand reach up and give a yank on the shoulder harness until it locks. Keep pressure with the left hand at this point because if it retracts you lose the lock.

Click in to the seatbelt latch with the right hand, still maintaining pressure up at the shoulder harness.

Then scoot yourself up to your normal position (still maintaining pressure on the shoulder harness!!) to tighten all in place. All should be pretty tight at this point. It took me several tries to make this work but I eventually got the knack. If my explanation doesn't make sense email and I will try to help.

I autocrossed with a group on a round track and infield where we could get up to some fairly high speeds a couple of weekends ago and really appreciated knowing how to do this.

If you're going to be driving over your head, then you may need to protect it with a good helmet.

Close to the Dragon

We are in SE KY now and the weather hasn't been too bad. In the valley it was about 75F with clouds. Up on the mountains it was a bit cooler. MINIclo was right, layers are the way to go. Have had the sweatshirt on/off several times!

We are going to meet with you all at the overlook Thursday. We will be there before that and maybe even have a couple of runs in !

See you all there!

Unfortunately I won't get to Fontana until Thursday night - probably 10pm or so...
So, where will everyone be...Thursday night gathering? Friday breakfast?
This will be a blast!

Ha ha ha. I got kicked off the band bus (they finally got enough chaperones) so I am driving to Atlanta on Friday. Will take the long and twisted way, of course.

Will pass through the dragon around 1-ish and then on to Cherohala. I will keep an eye out for you guys.

David and I both (both cars) will come back through on Saturday
around 5-6pm.

A little over an hour from now I’m leaving work and heading to Yucca Patrols house in Birmingham, Al, the first stop on my way to the Dragon. After staying there for the night we’ll be zooming out early Thursday morning and in about 4 hours will be buzzing Hwy 129, The Dragon. We’ll be stopping at the overlook between 11:30/Noon for a little break then off to Fontana to unload.

We’ll be looking for MINIs along the way. Have fun people and remember, be safe out there.
