Ugh... I didn't mean for this to turn into a discussion on how awful "stealerships" are. Everyone knows to watch themselves at buy-here/pay-here lots. I'm only putting this up in case someone is interested. If it proves to not have been in an accident it would be a great find. I personally am not looking for a turbo MINI. I already have one and I freakin hate it. I came across this in my searches and thought someone else might like to have a go at it.

From what I've seen driving by and in the pics online, besides the stupid wheels with blizzaks and the 2 missing panels it looks like a pretty good find. The price is my only gripe considering the replacement part costs to take it back to stock JCW appearance.

I'd be willing to help out my fellow MINIAC's if someone wants me to have a closer look and take it to Cincinnati MINI to get inspected. I know one of the salesmen there so he might be able to hook me up if the shop is slow.

The only reason it turned into a "stealership" comment was because the car had tell tale signs of being in an accident, and the dealership didn't mention it. Be vigilant at all dealerships, not just "buy her/pay here" near the Navy base. I almost got burned at a Nissan dealership in an affluent Chicago suburb. An inspection is just good advice in general whether private party or dealership.

Patrick MINI in Chicago charged me $75 for an inspection which found major structural damage.. This was 10 years ago.. Prices may be more. $50 is what a small town independant shop would charge.

You got a great deal on yours.

The Bat auction ended at $10,250.

Another one to watch is a rather immaculate and well-kitted 05 JCW with 30k also,
currently offered on eBay for an asking price of (!) $20,995...

$20k is way too much, but they'd have a better argument had they left the arches unpainted. At that price I expect it to be 100% bone stock.

Yup,
and I agree about the painted arches -- in my opinion it messes up the lines and sort of gives a "kit car" look...

...speaking of 100% bone stock original, did you see that '64 Austin Cooper S that went total BaTmadness stratosphere and sold for $80,000?

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...in-cooper-s-2/

Pretty cool!

I like it but it's missing some of the JCW bits I would expect to see for that price. Wheels are standard S-lites, Can't tell if the steering wheel is the JCW or just has a wrap on it. MIssing the carbon inserts on the steering wheel and the carbon down pipes around the radio/climate controls. Can't tell if the claim on the JCW brake kit is true or if someone just painted the factory calipers red. Overall I think it is beautiful but not 18-20k beautiful. Maybe 12k due to the low mileage and the installed JCW bits. If he was offered 12k for it I bet he would laugh at me in a counter offer :p

Hmm - maybe I should list mine... it's exactly like that Checkmate, but without the ugly Checkmate interior. Wonder if I could get $10k for it. hmm.

Nope... its the checkmate package. That's why he has it listed so high. I doubt he will get 10k for it. Low miles and great options tho. I"d give him 8k for it at most.

I always loved the checkmate package, but I'm a firm believer that leather should only be brown or black. That car would have looked amazing with lounge leather and a black steering wheel.

I do agree about the steering wheel but I like the rest of the interior. I had an MC40 with the red and gray leather so I might be one of the few who likes the blue and gray also...

I agree! Mine has the sport cloth seats and the black leather steering wheel with Anthracite panels. I do wish the panels were Space Blue like the Checkmate, I've been thinking about having them professionally painted to match.

Agree, you are spot on where this car should be. That’s about a 20% premium for the Checkmate package above other R53s of similar age/mileage.

Hope this car finds the right owner.

Came across this in my neck of the woods, I may actually try and contact and throw out a lowball offer as it'd be an excellent parts car,
has the R53 shift light too...

https://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/c...694614184.html

...overpriced for an ailing automatic though.

I hate when listings say John Cooper Works and then it’s an automatic since there isn’t such a thing as a R53 JCW with an automatic.

But it does have a lot of good options if you are a lover of blue!

Listed on Orange County Craigslist and was gone within an hour!

Why do you say there's no such thing? It was a dealer installed add-on, so couldn't it be added to any spec Cooper S? I've never actually seen one in the wild, and the version in the link didn't have badges, so I'm skeptical as well.

I say there is no such thing as a 1st gen JCW automatic because MINI did not allow one to add the JCW option on an automatic car in the 1st gen days. In theory one could put most of the JCW kit on as a “dealer installed” option, but I assume the software was manual only. However, since MINI didn’t allow automatics to be JCW at the time the R50/52/53’s were sold new, I would never call an auto R50/52/53 a JCW. Also, the R50/52/53 cars never even had a “JCW appearance” package like the later cars had. So to me a JCW car would have to be a manual.

After all, MINI didn’t even allow “S” cars to be automatic until 2005MY.

I believe that actual automatic JCW cars came about around 2012/2013 with the last of the R56s. The only JCW automatic I’ve personally seen was a 2013 R59 JCW roadster.

Here’s a good article on the factory JCW kit from MotoringFile

http://www.motoringfile.com/2005/07/...06_model_year/

“But the really good news is that this is not just a few accessories that will be available from the Oxford Plant, but the full JCW Engine Kit. The factory JCW Engine upgrade will be available for both the Cooper S hardtop and the Cooper S convertible (with manual transmission only)”

YOWZA!

That's low miles for an '02.

A neat example of an early JCW car --- would love to see more pix, shame they don't show the motor and more given the somewhat highish asking price.

Pretty dang neat tho.
