Front License Plate

Greetings all,

Quick question I hope.

Could someone tell me if front license plates are mandatory in Colorado? If they are mandatory then is it legal to get a European style plate and put your Colorado license on it?

Thanks for any info.

Nth

p.s.

Hello to all the MINI and Mini owners out there. I've had my MCS since the second week of July. His name is SPOON and he's excited to be in Colorado. We motor around the Colorado Springs area but will expand our territory, time permitting.

nthworf,

Yes, Colo requires a front plate. I'm not sure about the euro plate idea.

I have been motoring for years in Colo Springs without a front plate. Haven't been pulled over yet. From what I have heard, cops won't pull you over just for a front license plate missing. But if they do catch you/me, I'm sure there will be a big fine to pay.

What color is your MINI?

Back in 1999

the CO legislature actually proposed (maybe passed) a bill, HB1178, allowing for only 1 plate. Find the bill at:

http://www.state.co.us/gov_dir/leg_d...s99/hb1178.htm

Good Luck..

Spoon

SPOON is hyperblue with white bonnet stripes and a roof rack. Nothing special on him except the JCW air intake/filter thingamajig.

Met Trinity at Sonic and she has educated me on the wonders of a pulley so that's going to be my next upgrade. Either that or the parcel shelf. Just depends on when I have time and money to head up to webb motorsports for the pulley.

Here's the link to the Euro plates if anyone is interested.

http://www.licenseplates.tv/index.php/cPath/2_242

Thanks for the quick replies. I searched that DMV.org site before and even when they directed me to the main Co DMV site. It's pretty ambiguous (sp?).

I haven't gotten plates for SPOON yet so when I do I'll ask and then post here what I came up with. I think getting the Euro front plates would be cool.

Nothing against the shelf

but it will not do much for your HP or performance.

I keep my stuff in a plastic King Soopers bag on the passenger side floor.

This is a great looking mounting for the plate. Would you please tell us how and with what. I'd like to do the same.

Many thanks.

no additional HP from the shelf????

You mean to tell me that the description they had for the parcel shelf was a lie? It told me that I'd get an additional 50 HP from it.

I might have to reconsider that purchase then hehe.

I'm already getting the saddle pouch things that hang off the shifter. Those will add at least 5hp. I used to hang a plastic grocery bag off the shifter in my other cars but the MINI is too small and the little bags look cooler hehe.

conclave?

Sounds kind of fishy. I'm not going to have to convert to druidism and dance naked around a tree in the moon light am I? hehe

That would be a 'Concubine'

According to Merriam-Webster Online:

Main Entry: con·clave
Pronunciation: 'kän-"klAv
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French or Medieval Latin; Middle French, from Medieval Latin, from Latin, room that can be locked up, from com- + clavis key -- more at CLAVICLE
1 : a private meeting or secret assembly; especially : a meeting of Roman Catholic cardinals secluded continuously while choosing a pope
2 : a gathering of a group or association

Main Entry: con·cu·bine
Pronunciation: 'kä[ng]-kyu-"bIn, 'kän-
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin concubina, from com- + cubare to lie
: a woman with whom a man cohabits without being married: as a : one having a recognized social status in a household below that of a wife b : MISTRESS 4a

There seems to be a difference. One sounds more interesting than the other.

Do What I Did!

Install both of them on the back so that when the time comes to install your front one, you won't go crazy looking for it.

Europlates with same numbers are ilegal. you'll still get a ticket, though they look very cool!

unfortunately the front plate is mandatory

I have been pulled over for not running front plates (up on 285 near some small podunk town -- cop actually pulled the u-turn in the middle of the road to get me!) and then written a ticket for not having an up-to-date insurance card in the vehicle, in addition to getting a ticket for not having a front plate while the car was parked in Boulder! So yes I have been informed in no uncertain terms that a front plate is mandatory in CO (it's needed to bust you in the photo radar traps).

I've never received a photo radar ticket, so I can't confirm from personal experience, but I thought they had to take a picture from the front to confirm that you were actually driving the car (otherwise couldn't you just fight the ticket and say "I wasn't driving the car at that time, it was my dog"?).

but with a low res camera it would be hard to get a good pic of the driver as well. plus going through the glass i would think would screw up the pic. you could zoom, but that is only so good. you are right it would be pretty easy to tell the difference of your dog and you driving.

To answer your questions...

Yes you are required to have a front license plate in Colorado.

According to Colorado Revised Statutes 42-3-203 "Standardized Plates"... "(1) Unless otherwise authorized by statute, all Class C vehicles shall be issued a single type of standardized license plate. Unless otherwise authorized by statute, all Class B vehicles, except recreational trucks, shall be issued a single type of standardized license plate."

The State fine for not having a front license plate = $15 + 3.60 surcharge. Note: Cities may have their own fine schedule. Warning: The City of Denver will ticket your car ($40 fine) if it is parked on the street or other City property without a front license plate.

To the OP, do you have a "Spoon" decal on your rear spoiler and a roof rack? If so, I parked next to you a few weeks ago at the dollar theatre parking lot. Nice MINI
