Need a TUNE?
Depending on the date/time/price, I might be interested.
I've got a 2003 Cooper S. The last owner installed a 17% pulley and a plugs/wire kit from Mini Mania.
Question, though - my last car was a WRX and although I never got around to tuning it I read quite a bit about it, and became familiar with some of the local tuners/facilities by name.
Turbocharged is different than supercharged, though, so my question becomes - what kind of power gains is a custom tune likely to be able to safely make in my R53?
Also, I know Cobb makes an Access Port for the turbo charged MINIs, but is there a similar product for the supercharged ones that would let me store and change maps (sort of) on the fly so I could get tuned for 91 octane and ethanol (if that's even appropriate for MINIs, I dunno)?
I guess that overall, I'm looking for bang for the buck here - if it's likely to give me a much better driving experience for a reasonable price, sure. If it's likely to give me minimal power increases, then I'll stick with what she's doing now.

I will be sending you a PM. There are other options.
Some of the prices have been posted in post #2 with the list. Still working on getting a deal on dyno time for everybody. Any suggestions on dates yet?
(**Reminder** The wonderfull US government has me in Germany from April 5th through April 30th. Though not entirely nessicary I would like to be there for this event.

Sorry for the late reply. No I'm in the reserves. Did three years of active at the greatest Army post in the world (Ft. Campbell) as an Infantryman in the 101st.
Then ETS'ed and took a couple years off before becoming a reserve Engineer. For the last 6 years I have been a heavy equipment opperator, and am do to get out once and for all this August.

OK, we can get the March time somewhere, are we doing dyno only or is your guy going to be available. Send me a private message here or to my email.
I would like to get this on the MINI5280 Calendar as a March Club Dyno Day.
Also, the 17th a few folks will probably having their MINIs in the WWA Car Show, but I suspect those folks will not be primary Dyno MINI folks.
I will post up another message regarding WWA's invite.

Ok, so its time to see who is serious.
Found out that the dyno needs to be reserved in advance with full payment of $700.00 per day for unlimited cars. With the amount of people on the list if all are still up for it DYNO COST will be less than $100.00 per car. This is a good discount from BoosCreep's normal $150.00 fee. Me and the 5280 powers that be still need to figgure out how to collect your dyno deposit to get the facility reserved for the 16th of March.
With my special skills (a friend that works for the airlines) I am able to get (The un named tuner) out here with a minimum of 5~6 cars to be tuned. We have more than that on the list now, so that leaves room for a couple drop outs.
Confining the event to one day is do able with the amount of people signed up. But it will be an early morning / late night with a car always straped down getting tested. Figgure 30 minutes for baseline pulls, and 1~2 hours for a good tune, add in the rigging time and it will cut things short on time. If it comes to a point where we need to run over into the 17th that is going to raise dyno costs.
If you would like to be taken off, or have yet to be added to the sign up list, let me know. We are running out of time to get the details worked out. Once everyone has confirmed that they are still interested and ready to go, we will have an exact price.

I am in as well. Don't mind the early hours since I normally up around 4. I did have a tune done at the last MINI5280 dyno day. This time I want to be able to save it on a device so that I can reload it once the dealer flash it back to the standard tune.

I am in, I would like an after lunch slot. I would like to get a re-tune, if it is possible since my ECU was reset back to stock and updated to current image of May, 2011.
But I will be up in mid-morning to cheer for the folks on the dyno.

Anybody up for a spring tune party?
I am working with a well known tuner, to get him out to the Denver area for a tune party this spring.
So if you are interested let me know. I will also need to know if you have an R50/R53/R56 the year of the car, and if you would be willing to let the tuner use your car for the demonstration. Also If you have any suggestions on dates or shops, post them up. As always questions are welcome, and encouraged.
***I can NOT name the tuner on this forum, or the thread will be deleted. AGAIN!***

If it's who I think this is, the last time he was out this way two R53's in my club blew up the engines on the dyno.
IMO unless you have a VERY well taken care of R53 which has has a substancial amount of OEM parts replaced with new, and maybe after having a compression check done. An aftermaret tune is a BAD idea, especially for a daily driver.....
My 2 cents, take it for what it's worth.
IMO most stock or lightly modified R50's, 2's and R53's have about what 80-90K miles on the ticker at this point ?

Check the belt tensioners and belts on R53 models. And everybody that is planing on attending CHECK YOUR FLUID LEVELS. Its also a good idea to do an oil change a few days before the dyno day. If there are any strange or out of the ordanary issues / noises coming from your engine, clutch, or transmission, it's probably not such a good idea for you to be on the dyno.
We will probably be doing a quick inspection before anybodys car is straped down to the dyno, but it is still done at your own risk.
We should have plenty of room for you. I am planing on doing a recon of the dyno facility in the next couple weeks, to see what else we might need.
Good thoughts about maintenance and being sure your MINI engine is strong. I agree with DG and GR, if you suspect your engine might be a bit weak, it is at your own risk.
Although, most folks who tune know the risks but be aware and not surprised.
It does not matter who tunes , if your engine is weak results may be bad.
So, enough said on this topic, back to the thread.
Thank you,
Don

I think I remember hearing stories of two cars with issues at a dyno tune, but if IIRC neither were stock. One car had an aftermarket downpipe blow off since it wasn't put on securely and the other car was found to have low compression due to some weird aftermarket cam advance that didn't allow the valves to close all the way. At least that was what I heard. I think stock tunes and cars would benefit most from a tune. Power is smoother, comes on in more usable places and makes the car more drive-able.
Also remember, as stated, how a car is maintaned, and how it is driven matters. Even if one never went over 4K rpm, the difference will be obvious.
My personal experience is 110k hard driven miles and the dyno tune has made the car much easier to drive. I don't get anywhere near peak HP most days, but the fact that I have over 190 ftlbs of torque at 3600 rpm does make every drive better, more fun and less dramatic. The feel of the gas pedal is more linear and faster responding, so even tooling around town shows benefits.
