Local Pizza Joints - Denver Area
Local Pizza Joints - Denver Area
So my family and I (mostly I) have decided to try as many local pizza spots as we dare this summer. Local only, no chains. I'm looking for suggestions, descriptions and directions.
Down in our part of the world we enjoy Big Bills (Holly & County Line) which is a New York style with big flavor, slightly chewy crust and more than it's fair share of grease. I'd give it about a 6 out of 10.
Last weekend we tried Frank The Pizza King (Broadway & Union) which was tasty. Thin crisp crust, good sauce and very good Italian sausage. More Neapolitan than New York. I'm giving it a 7 out of 10.
We also like Beau Jo's but their store at University & County Line closed. They went for a thicker crust piled high with meat and good sauce. More bready than I usually care for and considerable grease but very flavorful. I would give it an 8 out of 10.
So help us out with your best local pizza joint suggestions.

Up here in Loveland, we have a place that we enjoy called Justine's. The Justine's special is full of flavor with the right amount of crust. I personally feel the sauerkraut and pepperoni is to die for.
Yes, sauerkraut would make me die. I would probably gag first then die.
OK Dave, I'm adding it to our list in case we get way up north. Tell me does it ever get light so far north? Are there Eskimos and polar bears?

Assuming it is a pizza thread
then I like the other place on your corner, Chuck - Micceli's. Try the Med thin, veggie, with two chopped salads. Feeds 3 for under $25.
They like the Hawaiian with ham and pineapple.
And sauerkraut on a Reuben....yummy.

No polar bears... but we do have Penguins! A good ice cream place... tastes good after pizza.

In NE Longmont there is Nicolo's Pizza on the corner of 17th Ave & Pace. (I think there are a few other locations outside of Longmont). It's New York style (not greasy) and delicious. Our favorite is the medium pepperoni. They know us pretty well since we live down the street from them...
Speaking of ice cream, Snow Mountain Creamery in N Longmont is pretty good too.

Sauerkraut is the devil's caviar. Makes me ill just typing the word.
We do Micceli's too. Not bad but really not that different from Big Bill's; a 6.
Does the Bonnie Brae Tavern make pizza? Might be worth a try.

Best pizza by far in the state without question is Rosati's. There are 2 locations in Colorado. One at Wadsworth and Church Ranch(southeast corner) and one at 128th and Zuni (northeast corner). Great Chicago style pizza. Not trying to offend, but nothing in Colorado can even compare, and I may be a little biased since I grew up in Chicago!!
Another Chicago style pizza place in Denver is Aurelio's. They are located at 5022 E. Hampden. This pizza is good but not as good as the pizza from Rosati's.

Wow, pizza. I like pizza. (as if you couldn't tell from my belly) Suggestions, from anywhere it would seem, if you'll go to Loveland then most anything is fair game.
Green Mountain: Frontroom Pizza, locally owned and operated since some time int eh 70s, pretty good pizza and a small salad bar that I swear has crack cocaine in the ranch dressing. Overall a good family friendly dining experience.
North, West or East: We can't overlook the awesome food found at Woody's Woodfired Pizza, it's a small chain, with three loccations in town, but still worth it. One in Golden, one in Westminster and one in SE Denver. They've got a pizza bar as well, so it's easy to try lots of kinds of pizza. They also have salad bar with a pretty tasty potato cheese soup.
Lakewood: Virgillios is another tasty place, and I recommend having their bread knots if you go. Yum!
Parker: Parry's Pizza on Lincoln Road (across from the Wildlife place). They're a family owned/operated NY style pizza place. Really good food.
Englewood: Santoros is a good place to eat as well. This one may or may not be there anymore. I know they'd opened a second location, but it's closed, so I can't vouch for the original store. It's not near me and I rarely am in the neighborhood. If it's still there then I recommend it, we usually order pizza and their ceasar salad, tis very good.
I'm sure I know of others, but right now they're not in my brain. For instance I know that theres a good place in Estes Park... but I don't know the name or exact location, so that's not helpful. I'll keep you posted as things come up.
Oh, and if you still want Beau Jo's don't forget that there's one at Colordo Blvd and Yale (SE corner).
Happy eating!

Yup, they sure do, Bonnie Brae Tavern Menu.
Ok So I'm from Buffalo NY and yes we are known for wings but I'm partial to the pizza also. It took sometime for us to find anything like it but we did! lucianos pizza and wings http://www.lucianospizzaandwings.com/menu.html I never had the wings so can't say they are as good as true Buffalo ones but the chicken finger subs are.
I'm intrigued by this progressive dinner idea. Make it in to the pizza pan rallye or something. At 1/2 slice per stop, I'd be good for 12 or 14 different pies.
<checks the time, yup lunch.>

So we're pizza joint snobs coming from the East coast, so we've really had to search to get some good ones. Mannie and Bo's in Golden is the closet we can come. They have AWESOME and huge calzones, good thin and thick crust pizza as well as you MUST get cheese bread (not cheese stix, athough they are good too) Best sauce. Great food, service sucks (really), but it's worth it.
Woody's has a great Monday all you can eat buffet (dinner), I'd recommend the one in Broomfield, the one in Westminster on 92nd is not the best. They also have killer fried dough for dessert.

This thread is making me drool! As if I don't enough already from MINI photos. ;P
If the regular BeauJo's pizza is a bit bready, try the Prairie Pie configuration. It's less crust but with all the great flavor.
Okay, time for lunch!

What we need is somebody with some creative abilities to come up with a pizza rallye. Like a Yalla Yalla type ride where everyone goes to the same places, just by different routes and different order. Needs an Italian Job theme and a cool logo & acronym.
Nice prizes could be offered for most eaten or most unusual slice and then we could all gather, bloat and drink beer while watching the Italian Job.
As soon as you get done planning and presenting the Summer Solstice Ride, y'all can start working on this one.
