Just got estimate for electrical upgrades
Ouch indeed! Is it any cheaper to just run a 100 Amp total, and 40A to the garage? You should check with CFCI when they do your inspection, but from the postings here it seems people with only 100A service are still passing the inspection.
My 100amp box is maxed, without even a space for another breaker. I have an electric dryer and electric oven/range running through the box along with circuits covering the rest of the house. 200 is a necessity to not overload the main breaker. My house was built in the '50s, though the box seems to be about 25 years old and done when the second story was put on. It's still way below modern power needs.
Bummer - it would be a show-stopper for me too. With enough mental gymnastics I can justify the $850 lease for a year. But to shell out the cost of an American Stratocaster (I'm an amateur guitar player and think of all major purchases in terms of gear I could buy instead) for some wiring I wouldn't otherwise need . . . Don't think so.
Oh well, a JcW should do quite nicely to ease the pain! I think that may be my after-Mini-E car.

Well, isn't this an odd coincidence. Just got my CFCI contract today. I have a 2005 house, the 200A panel, lots of empty space etc. Unfortunately, I have an L-shaped house, the garage is the stubby lower part of the L, and my panel is at the top left corner of the L. As I suspected, mine wouldn't be a standard install, since they have to run conduit up into the attic and over to the garage. I was expecting some surcharge for that, but the contract wants me to pay an additional $1,527! An American Deluxe Strat is $1,599 - did I peg that or what?
I've set an e-mail to my dealer. I know they are short of Mini E test pilots at the moment, so who knows what they'll say. But barring a miracle, looks like I'm out too.

I too received my contract and my cost will be $500.00 My 100 amp panel can't handle another 40amp circuit. Since I'm an Edison customer they're able to do a work around that involves a Time of Use Meter, a disconnect and a 40 amp subpanel (I spoke to them about this and it's not really a subpanel but a box of some sort) The $500.00 covers the extra cost of this type of installation. While disappointed with this additional cost I'm still moving forward and thankful I didn't need a full panel upgrade.

It isn't necessary to use CFCI for the upgrade. Shop around. I had three estimates for the work needed and ended up paying $670.
I don't pretend to know electrical codes or rules, but is it a possibility to run an extension from your electric oven, dryer or AC and keep the applicance off when charging?

That's not a bad idea, Waterway. I'll look into that

In San Clemente, as is the case here in Irvine, you rarely need AC after about 8 PM. AC off at 9 PM. MINI on at 9:01 PM. I'm sure you can convince your family how important this experiment is ...
Yes, sharing the line with the AC is a good idea and I did explore it with CFCi - they said the building code wouldn't allow two 40A draws to share the same 40A circuit period. Setting things up so only one at a time is using it doesn't affect the rule. I think I've exhausted every practical option. I'm out.
Hey EB,
Sorry to hear you're out. I would have been in the same situation.
Since my wife will be using the MINI-E more than I (she has a commute, I work from home), the grocery bag souvenirs have her name. Check 'em out.

I have t-shirts too in MINI-E yellow and gray.
