Just another DIY Oil Change

Decided to document and write up my latest oil change in case anyone wanted to do it themselves but either didn't know how or had some questions.

Let me know what you think!

I would suggest noting in your DIY that its really really important to oil that new oil ring well to avoid cutting or breaking it on installing the canister. This has happened to me and to the dealer techs I know (a lot, particularly lately). Leaking O-ring sucks!

I did mention it, but you're right... I should add a lot more emphasis to it!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Mountain dew before and during automotive work. Need caffeen and sugar!

Beer AFTER everything is properly put back together, tools cleaned and put away, and you've cleaned yourself up enough to sit on the couch!

shankrabbit - good job! A couple of suggestions:
To give the location of an item in a car you should always use the point of view of sitting in the drivers seat ... the oil canister is located on the right hand side of the engine
If you break the seal of the oil canister, while your oil is draining, the majority of the oil will drain out the oil pan and you won't have the Exxon Valdez experience
When you start to put the canister back on the block, use your finger tips to feel if it is on straight. You can feel gap between the canister lip and the edge of the oil filter housing and if it's even - you're not cross threaded.

Where would one go to properly dispose of ones old oil? I heard someone say jiffy lube, but how would one get it there without spilling?

Pour it into the empty bottles or empty milk jugs... that's what I do.

Hm... I guess that's like "stage right/stage left" in acting... Can't say I like that.

I think my mini hates me... I think I did mention in the write up that you should crack the seal on the canister before draining the oil (step 2), it's what I do anyway, yet I always get the drippy oil from getting filter out.

When you start to put the canister back on the block, use your finger tips to feel if it is on straight. You can feel gap between the canister lip and the edge of the oil filter housing and if it's even - you're not cross threaded.

Oooh... I like that idea!

Thanks for the awesome feedback.

AutoZone and Pepboys accept used oil.

Our 06 MCS took 4.7 quarts of oil. I read that it took 5 quarts and had to ween .3 quarts out for the proper dipstick level. IMHO.

Hi...just wondering where the best place to order the OEM filters online might be? Also is there a recommended brand of oil from the dealer? Thanks.
